The BBC seem to be pushing their young male newsreaders at the moment. Have seen Barra Best a few times doing the news, and the weather, over the past few weeks.

Agreed about Mr Mallett. He looked quite gaunt the last time I saw him doing the news.

Could be a reaction to all the ladyclones at UTV. I'd say Barra will get more shots at doing the weather when Jackie McCann goes off on maternity leave. I caught one of his forecasts last weekend and he's not bad.

Come to think of it, the young men of Newsline seem to be getting more bulletins than the females; I've only seen the lovely Michelle Napier on duty, I've seen no sign of Jo Scott, Ciara Riddell or Lindsay Armstrong (so much for the latter's arrival seemingly at the expense of the now-thriving-at-Havoc-House Rose Neill) - are they still about? There was also a guy called Declan Lawn who also read BBC Newsline bulletins when I was last in NI at Christmas, is he also still around?

If you watch Newsline in the morning during Breakfast you will come across Jo Scott and Lindsay Armstrong. During the Easter break Lindsay graduated to an evening summary one night. I've never seen Ciara read a bulletin, or Declan. There is that other guy who is ALWAYS on these days, especially after the 10 O'Clock news, I don't know his name.

Well that was dull. I didn't see the start, but it seems that the audience were not allowed to ask any questions.

Also, should the programme title not have had an apostrophe in it? I.e. Leaders' Debate ... not Leaders Debate.

Indeed. But then, UTV don't have a great record when it comes to apostrophes:

The UTV "Leaders' " Debate really was awful - even by their standards.

Awful into?. "Two Tribes"? Pathetic!

Awful moderation.

Awful style / format.

Awful audience participation.

Just awful.

Looking forward to better from BBC NI two days before polling day. I'd prefer if Noel Thompson does it, though I suspect it'll be Mark Carruthers. I'd also like Alliance and TUV to be in it - the former are standing in all 18 seats, and the latter got nearly 13% of the vote in the last real election, so they should be involved. Might also make it a bit livlier.

But, getting back to last Thursday's, what a shambles.

At least they still have the old music...

Can't find any info on who's doing what at Havoc House re: election coverage, so I'll throw my two cents in.

No doubt it'll be Paul, Ken and possibly Jim around a desk in the studio as host and analysts as always. I wonder who will get the honour of being "second host" either in the studio or at City Hall - like what Fearghal McKinney used to be before Mrs Ritchie snapped her fingers. I'd personally like to see one of the senior reporters (Niall, Jane or Tracey) step up to this role, but knowing me, it'll probably be Golden Girl O'Neill or Golden Girl Clarke - or, most likely given how he's been chairing the debate programmes, Jim Dougal may be pencilled in for this role.

I hope Alison is involved in UTV's election coverage somehow; and not just as a glorified newsreader, she may be dispatched up to the North West again like in the 2007 Assembly election coverage. Would be nice to see Tina Campbell involved in some way too, she has proved in the past she can confidently handle political interviews and reporting, and, IMO, she is wasted on just the Seven Thirty Show.

I'd love it if UTV have approached Big Ivan to freelance at the North Antrim count, it wouldn't be the same without him facing off against a Paisley Laughing

Will certainly be interesting to see how UTV cover Strangford and Fermanagh and South Tyrone. Will Lynda be at Mike's side when the Strangford result is declared? And will she be back on Live at Six next Monday?!?

They're using the same music from 2003 I see!

Interestingly that they'll have people out and about on the evening, and will be updating their website etc. so a strange decision not to do a live programme that night.

Unless they're thinking people will be more interested in the UK picture.

Have the other NI media picked up on UTV's decision not to run live coverage of the election results? Surely from what (at least until fairly recently) was the most popular local news broadcaster in NI this is a big climbdown? I cannot remember any other recent election UTV did not run live coverage of the NI results although this may have due to the fact that the count was always during the day before wheras this year it will be overnight.

Still it seems a bad move and one that will surely hand the local audience over to BBC NI and (for those who have it) RTÉ?

Election aside, Mr M did the UTV lunchtime news yesterday live from Belfast City Airport. Last night's Live at Six saw, unusually, Paul in the studio and Ali doing the live OB - with two cameras and all!

I see from the trailers that Sarah Travers will be live in London as part of the BBC Northern Ireland coverage tonight . . . from what seems to be a lovely studio, furnished along the same lines as the revamped Newsline set which is being used for the Belfast broadcast.

Also, Donna Traynor did indeed mention in today's bulletins that BBC Northern Ireland are the ONLY local broadcaster covering tonight's results on television. To echo an earlier comment - epic fail on UTV's part.

Also mentioned last night by Noel Thompson. I've got shots of the election studio from last night's newsline but can't get them captured at the moment, but I'll hopefully have it uploaded along with other shots from the programme on my website tomorrow.

Oh and while I'm here, I've also re-uploaded some captures from Vote 07 ... http://www.freewebs.com/bbcnitoday/vote07.html
