http://www.bbc.co.uk/newcastle/programmes just came across this whilst playing around looking for the new local branding.

How long has there been an unusual looking breaking news banner at the top of articles on BBC News?

Around 18 months, only used when the duty editor considers the story to be important enough.

Quite an exciting new development is the new Five Live website:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/5live/
Looks the same as any other site on the BBC I know but it's much more 'reactive' to providing bits of audio (and "radio video") relevant to the day's news and sport offerings.
Unique for the Five Live website (but sure to spread across the radio sites) is the new "chaptering" of listen again. Take the Mayo show (even though he's about to be announced as Radio 2's new Drivetime presenter):
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00mkbw8
A page for today's show- the link at the top is for the full 3 hours show on listen again, but scroll down and there are chapters available to pick out the content featured on the page. Quite clever when you have such a diverse programme over 3 hours each day.

I wonder what the thinking behind changing the 5live site background to grey was?

Hmm, not convinced by the grey, either. Rest of the site looks good, though.
Why not? It looks good.
