Strange slide though, the picture was of a map of scotland, floating on its own. Odd choice for a 'generic' weather caption.

There are pros and cons to both blue and green for the weather and for keying in general.

Blue is a good choice as any spill will appear similar to the sea. Green is good because it is one of the colours least likely to appear as a fleshtone. People are more likely to wear blue clothes than green as well - so green is often used for down-the-line interview studios - as men often wear blue shirts, but seldom green ones...

One of the issues that they have at the BBC Weather operation is that the system is entirely automated - with just the weather presenter operating it. Therefore things like lighting, camera set-up (exposure, colour balance etc.) and chroma key/CSO clipping and set-up are not optimised daily but are set-up and left. They also don't appear to use the best quality keyers in the world... In an ideal world they'd use an Ultimatte or similar - but I suspect the cost of using these would be prohibitive.

I see Michael Fish is back forecasting again for netweather.tv.

No blue-screen or green-screen CSO debates for this. Just a webcam in his bedroom by the looks of it! But interesting to see the Jetstream forecast as part of the bulletin. Given the effect it has on our weather, I don't see why it doesn't get mentioned more in forecasts.

Why does he have to make so many "mistakes"? He has these slips of the tongue and other mishaps all the time. I wonder whether he's doing this purposely to get attention. Do a search on YouTube for all of his bloopers. He's not even professional about it after the mistake.

I agree, he does seem to make more of these newsworthy mistakes than anyone else

I wasn't going to mention this but as other people have bumped this thread today, I will. Did anyone see a red square on the map at the end of the News at 6 today?

Just watching BBC Two now and the weather map is placed on the left, as are the other graphics.. is this just for BBC Two, or is it a new look for the weather, maybe?

It's a BBC Two thing and has been since the channel's recent graphics update.

It's to accommodate the new '2' animation which is neither pointless nor silly. And of course they couldn't have just moved the 2 to the right of the screen to accommodate the usual weather graphics, certainly not...

It really is bloody stupid. The British Isles' weather generally comes in from the Atlantic and travels west to east. So it makes absolutely no sense to have so much of continental Europe shown on the map, as what's happening to the east of us is largely irrelevant. This is why almost every other TV forecast ever has had the weather presenter on the left, and the British Isles right of centre.

A new weather presenter on the red button and the BBC News channel this afternoon, called Sarah Keith-Lucas. Is she from one of the regions or completely new?
