Wow, finally something professional from RTE!

Thanks for the caps, and by the look of them, the backdrop is a rear-projected screen (I'm no expert though). Maybe Six One will reveal some as-yet-unseen set, but it looks like RTÉ have spent a whole lot of money expanding their studio only to shove a desk into the corner of a set no bigger than anything they've had before. No sign of a newsroom backdrop as was mentioned. If the backdrop is a rear-projection screen it would explain the apparent lack of space in this newly-expanded studio. And if that's the case (and maybe I'm assuming too much now) it would appear RTÉ have recreated their very own N6, which is really Not A Good Thing.

It looks like there is something towards the right of the studio...which may be why the shots are so tight.

Well, it's an infinite improvement over the last two messes, that's for sure. Is the newsroom view behind real, or a camera feed/virtual creation? Desk lovely, astons lovely (if a bit BBC Sport derived). Titles and music... RTE certainly has a love for the abstract titles Confused music is fairly OK, still both fantastic compared to before.

So we have lift-off!

The colour scheme is fresh and elegant, and the straps at last look ‘complete’ and polished (not sure why the ‘Dublin City’ tag is not aligned though, which is of concern at this early point). The title music is alas such a ‘newsy’ cliché, and the visual sequence more suited to a programme like Nationwide or Points of View than a news bulletin – far too whimsical!

The set is without question comprised of screens – as suspected, there is no newsroom proper featuring in this at all, which is a shame.

I’m surprised at the positive reaction to the set thus far – I think it’s absolutely appalling. It’s so 1990s, with that hideously ‘obvious’ deep blue, and laughably predictable curved desk with floorpiece inset – a concept now two decades out of date. The detailing is abominably poor for what should be a prestige bespoke design for the most prominent piece furniture in the land. This is bordering on a joke. Not a hint of quality or design craftsmanship.

The black flooring is again a decade out of date, entirely non-descript and a ridiculously lazy solution to cover a multitude of sins that they can't be arsed maintaining. It's reminiscent of the laziest of Prime Time editions from the mid-2000s and looks truly appalling. The studio lighting burning out the bottom of the screen backdrop behind the desk is horribly crass, and the tacked on silver strips appear cheap and garish.

I cannot believe the horrendous quality of the studio fit-out. One hoped when Prime Time was last relaunched that its cumbersome and inelegant scheme would be confined to that programme only, but clearly all the in-house designers have done - and this is most certainly an in-house job (with the odd contractor or two) - is tweak the Prime Time scheme in all its clunkiness and complete absence of professional design input to be a bit 'fresher'.

What a crying shame - at best it's on a par with the previous scheme. There is absolutely no improvement here folks.

Hmmm...set is a big let down, I imagined a MUCH brighter and classier finish something akin to Sky News - it is much too like Prime Time. I am unsure if it is really an improvement on the brightness and textured nature of the last set - I like the screens with animated background but the black floor is much too dark. I hope they don't intend to darken the bulletins as we go through the day. There is too much lighting on the news reader and not enough on the rest of the set - the opening wide is confusing - because it is so dark, the cameras are only half visible thus leaving the viewer wondering if they are supposed to be in shot. In previous BBC News sets, the cameras were highly visible making it obvious that they are supposed to be seen in shot.

I like the titles and music, a big improvement. The start of the title music is the same as the start of a particular (Irish?) tune played by brass bands before football matches..anybody else hearing this? ***EDIT*** Its the start of the tune O'Donnell Abú apparently. The graphics have been dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Very sports-like but better nonetheless. The text in the DOG needs to be raised up a few pixels, there's too much room above it. I love the way the 'Dublin City' part animated up and down - very swish.

I almost think there's too much going on in the backgound, lots of shapes and levels of depth in it - I'd rather it was a bit more plain and less confusing.

Overall though - graphics, music and all - a big improvement - I'll reserve complete judgement until 6.01 and 9...

Nice start to the 6.01 with Brian standing up to the right hand side of the set. Great headline bed and nice opening panoramic tracking shot which unfortunately looks rather dodgy in 14:9L (and I can imagine only much worse in 4:3) with only Brian's legs being visible. Brian is shouting and wobbling about quite a bit - I imagine he's quite excited. Una hasn't made a return - oh well. Set hasn't changed since the 1, but nice use of the high wide during Brian's interview with Murphy. Set very, very dark but not looking too bad.

I think they still have the same plastic "RTÉ NEWS" stickers on the lid of the laptops...change them please! If €5 million was spent, surely they can stick ones with the new logo on. Rolling Eyes

O'Donnell Abu has a very long connection with RTÉ - in fact its been RTÉ Radio 1's tuning signal for the last 72 years! RTÉ Radio 1 has little need of a tuning signal now that it is 24 hour, but they still play it for tradition's sake at 05:30am. After that though, the new theme blasts into what is essentially a re-arrangement of the theme they've been using since September 2006 (it sounds even more like the old theme at the end credits). That's not the only thing they've carried over from the chocolate look either, I STILL have no idea what the titles are supposed to be, although this time they are probably not supposed to be anything. Just looks like a load of paper flying around (is that supposed to be some kind of metaphor for the state of the economy). The DOG (now animated!) and the end of the titles are heavily inspired by the previous look as well.

The astons...yeah, they've basically stolen RTÉ Sport's old graphics minus the big electric blob thing that contained the team logo. Those who have said "BBC Sport' will need little reminding that RTÉ Sport essentially lifted huge chunks of the BBC Sport look when they unvieled their 2004 corporate look (including copying the BBC's "all sports programmes have to have the same style logo" policy).

The set looks good - well, traditional news blue instead of the awful chocolate brown we've had to endure for the past few years. Reminds me of ITV News for some reason, or at least, how ITV News' current look might have looked if they hadn't the Theatre of News, if you get me...

Other bits, the headline beat seems OTT and disco-y. Why did they change the logo again (there are three RTÉ house fonts - a serif mixed case font for Direcorates, a all caps sans serif font for Commissioning Genres (which was the font used by RTÉ News in the last look and still used by RTÉ Sport) and a its-not-Gill Sans-but-looks-just-like-it font used for channels.). This look uses none of those three fonts...

I don't suppose anyone has a nice rip of the music?

I tried to get it off the RTE.ie stream but it didn't want to work for me. I'm not an RTE viewer as I'm not Irish, however I do like this new look. I did however LOVE the music from the last look, but I'm actually happy with the new music, its modern and authoritive.

As for the set, I'm not sure. Its way too dark, it would look a lot better with a few more lights. The background is dark aswell so all in all we can't see very much. I think a skyline would look better, as seen on the Nine. Nice graphics also!

From web stream

I really don't care if it's unoriginal, derivative of the BBC, News at Ten or whatever, but it looks superb compared to what it was up until yesterday
