Grandstand was dropped for one reason alone- a lack of sporting rights. The BBC would have (and indeed did) get criticism, from people such as yourself, for sticking on one event on a Saturday often as lowly as bowls under the "Grandstand" banner.
It's the like of bowls that needs the Grandstand banner though, the bigger sports events such as football can work as standalone events. Grandstand is good a binder the sports which aren't big enough to warrant their own brand on the BBC such as Match of The Day.
