ok I've seen a report on the recent cyclone, in it they have George W Bush refer to the country as Burma, the Aussie PM as Burma and yet they still call it Myanmar. Why? GWB called it Burma so its not an american thing. What's the official stance? And what are BBC World and AJE refering to the country as?

The country was renamed Myanmar by the junta that currently run it. As most western countries don't support the junta they still call it Burma.

Glad you are enjoying it. Not sure what you mean by 'was' though.

Exactly.

EDIT: Moz, colonialism is technically dead (for the West), China's suspect involvment in Sudan (and to a lesser extent Zimbabwe)is probably the closest modern equivalent I can think of.

You could argue (with varying degrees of success!) that CNN is part of the US 'colonisation' of the world today...

...best not to though!

But that would surely be globalisation. I have the design brochure for the CNNi studios somewhere round here. Makes for quite interesting reading - its role in the life in the 'global citizen'.

All BBC News outlets refer to the country as Burma.
