The bad news is we have Andrew Jones tommorow for the morning/lunchtime news so its a good job I WILL NOT be watching untl 6pm.

I had to laugh at Emma J on the weather - she was wearing a tie! How come James Wright gets out of the weekend weather - surely he should share with Emma and Charlie, but no he just does Mon/Tue and then has a 5 day weekend.

How come that pic of Nicola has the current HTV Wales News dog on it - Nicola left long before the revamp in 2001. Was it an old clip they played on HTV News or something

As I said in the line above the picture [Wink], it was taken from a special archive compilation show last October, which had Nicola, Alan, Jonathan lurking in the back aged about 14, and other clips as well.

Here's a pic of the late Huw Weeks feeding a carrot to a donkey, and a young looking Lucy Cohen [with Jonathan], getting snuffled by a cow ~

LOL sorry I must have missed that bit where you said it was from a compilation programme - I think I remember that show as I saw Lucy and yes she does look very young in that, Jonathan does too.

I did read the bit about the woman in London who made comments about Wales not be Welsh enough in the South. I try and deguise my voice too but people can tell a mile off im from Wales. A bit like Lee Waters from HTV News - we both need to do a Lucy Cohen and get elocution lessons.

Why do you try and hide your accent?

Theres nothing wrong with a Welsh accent ( I know in some places the accent can be a bit unpleasing to the ear, mainly to outsiders) but in general the accent is fine. I've never had any complaints about my accent, not even from my time living in England, if anything it was quite the opposite. I don't know how many times I was asked to repeat something or say something else as the other person would say " Oh I just love your voice say it again " . One bizzare moment I experienced was when a woman asked me to say some lines from her favourite poem Surprised

I'm not entering much into this Welsh accent argument again, LOL, but all I'll say is that people still do make judgements on the accent you have, it is a fact -- and although my accent isn't very strong anyway [it comes back stronger depending who I'm talking to], there's no reason why it should become topic of conversation with someone who you're only going to be speaking to for about 30 seconds.

There's nothing wrong with the Welsh accent, well the south Welsh anyway Wink -- I like it, and it is meant to be a trustworthy accent. It's reckoned to be the third sexiest in the UK as well -- hmm, can't comment on that one.

That woman anyway was talking crap. There were more Welsh people in my road back in the bad place, than there are in the whole town of Mold.. Rolling Eyes

I'd be great to go to the same elocutionist as Ms Cohen started going to a few years ago -- they changed her accent completely! Although I'm not sure I want to be stressing each-and-every-syll-ab-le in the autocue quite so pronouncedly as she does, it still is great viewing!

I find the Welsh accent sexy - as you know I like Lee's accent. I wonder why Lucy wanted to go to an elocutionist? I honestly cant remember her accent being that stong. She does talk rather posh now though LOL

I also like Justina's voice and more or less everything else about her

I had broadcast training 2 years ago, and they more or less force you to speak with what's called an RP accent (received pronounciation).

It's all a load of **** really, I don't like it when people change their accents because they think that they will be perceived better.

I think she looks gorgeous in that pic -the jacket suits her.

And well this is a HTV thread - well most of the stuff on here is HTV anyway. And we've almost reached 100 pages.

I agree with you in theory Jamie, and of course there are many regional people reading the news with regional accent -- Andrea Catherwood, Kirsty Young, Huw Edwards.. [though these are all from the Nations -- not many Midlanders or Northern English people for some reason..] But even these people have toned down their accents. I'm not saying it's right or fair, but as you say, it's what the broadcasting industry seem to require.

It shouldn't be that way, RP isn't superior to correct English being spoken in a Llanelli accent -- but even people on here have snidely complained about not understanding Huw's accent [huh?], or saying he shouldn't be on 'English' tv [Err, try 'British'..], and if he's so proud, he should be on S4C.. People are nasty, they take offence at someone who doesn't sound RP on their telly box, so they should get off.

It's because history's always been like that -- even the old newsreaders on BBC Wales and HTV have broadly posh accents -- the fact they can pronounce Rhosllanerchrugog being the only giveaway to the fact they are indeed Welsh. It's just going to take time for people in Middle England and the dreadful London and Estuary area to realise this country extends beyond their gardens and emcompasses a variety of excellent accents, unique to the UK. You can travel across the vast United States, and the accents still don't vary nearly a fraction that they do if you literally go 10 miles up the road anywhere in this country.

I don't hide my accent to my family or friends [as if that would work..] or at work, it's not even that strong, and I lived in London for 9 years, but if I really can't be bothered with a, "oh, are you Welsh then...?" conversation to a stranger, I just don't stress it, it's no hardship.

I dont hide my accent either - just if I go to england and go in a shop and ask for something for example, they ask me to repeat myself cos they cant understand the Welsh accent.

And I like Lee's accent but I also think he looks nice when he has his glasses on.

Well here's something you are all very priveliged to hear - me on the radio! LOL

This is from last summer, and it was a pre-recorded segment called the 'New Music Review'', which was played out from mini disc during my main live show later in the evening.

I do sound quite strange in this clip - some of my pronounciations are a bit awkward - I'm normally word perfect, maybe it was the summer heat in the studio? Wink

Rule #1 of interviews: Never forget the name of the person you are talking to!! Laughing
