It now does it due to a dispute over patents. Anything that uses ActiveX now suffers the 'click to activate' nonsense. There is a javascript way round it, but for website admins it's too much work when they can just use the code churned out by Flash, as it doesn't work for the few people who have javascript disabled.

The whole YouTube set up got me thinking. Rather than linking to the video downloads as we do now, how about having the option to embed the clips in the page? There's a new tag I've added: [ video ]http://url_of_file.flv[ /video ] which allows this.

[video]http://tvfi/snowball.flv[/video]

This is just an experiement so please don't start filling up pages with these clips for the sake of it but I thought it might be quite a useful feature. I've used the freeware Riva FLV Encoder (http://rivavx.de/index.php?encoder&L=3) which converts from MPEG/AVI/WMV/QT for the clip above.

The window is currently fixed at 480x360 but it shouldn't be too difficult to make that poster-specific in the future.

Let me know what you think!

Cheers, Asa

Has this been disabled for new threads? I can see your video in the first post of this thread, but I can't seem to post a new video (or quote yours). This worked sometime last week IIRC but now this....

Was it turned off for a reason or is something wrong?

An addition was made a little while ago which overwrote the logic to do the above. Should be ok now.

FWIW, if you've encoded the file in true widescreen you can use [ wsvideo ]http://url/abc.flv[ /wsvideo ]

Thanks. Thats working now. The [wsvideo] tag is very useful too.

I second this request, this would be a great feature.

In the meantime, you can use this....

Enter a YouTube URL or just the bit after the v= in the URL and it will generate the BBCode for a picture and a link to the YouTube video. Like this...

Hmm, don't like in-line YouTube embedding really but this alternative is better.

I'm not sure about you, but the Widescreen version of the video tags stretches widescreen videos a bit too much. It makes it look like an aspect ratio a film would use.

Microsoft have finally been given permission to remove the "click to activate" 'feature' on ActiveX objects in their next set of Windows Updates (this month or January). Smile
