Now, fans of the The Ricky Gervais Show podcast will be famililar with the "Lion Mutilates 42 Midgets in Cambodian Ring-Fight" story from Episode 2. (Fans may also like to know that www.pilkipedia.co.uk is weird but wonderful)

But down to the nitty gritty. The image below shows that very news story (and its a great read!) from the BBC News website. Notice it is the UK Edition.

You will also notice down the right hand side that Google Ads appear. So my question is, has this always been the case (and I've never realised) or is there something a bit odd going on here (seeing as I thought us UK readers were ad-free...)?

It is a spoof - hence the ads.

What makes you say it is a spoof?

Because it says UK edition next to BBC News, not like the real thing which has the 2 little buttons.

Well the date of that article is May 2005. 'UK edition' was next to BBC News at that time.

But, yes, it is fake.

I didn't see the article, I just looked at the page. I didn't know it was like that before.
