He needed a bit more practice really!! On the afternoon bulletin he spoke too quickly and the Headlines seemed to short. On the Late bulletin he paused before the first headline, and thus ran over the thunderclap.
Here is the video of the Intro to the Late Bulletin on BBC One:

No, they never use World presenters - there's no point, as it doesn't boost their profiles like it does for News 24 presenters, as they are broadcasting inside the UK anyway.
The whole point wouldnt be to boost their profiles but instead to give BBC1 news some extra presenters during big strories and keep Dermot Murghan on breakfast

I don't think they used Dermot yesterday because there wasn't anyone else. I would have thought it would be to give him some experience on the national news and give viewers the chance to see him. With the implending war I think we may see more high profile presenters on News 24 so I would suspect that they are just raising the profile of all their presenters in the weeks leading up to it.
I also think that they do use News 24 presenters on BBC One to raise their profile. People are more likely to tune to News 24 if they recognise a face than if its a stranger. I think I'm right in saying that Jane Hill seemed to take the lead on Fri when News 24 was on BBC Two because she's probably more known to people than Matthew cos she's been doing the weekend and 1o'Clock news in the past few weeks.

Yes, but it would be no good cutting down some of BBC World's top presenters' shifts just so they can do some national work. This would mean relief presenters taking more shifts on World, and World would have lost its experienced presenters when something big breaks. You also have to take into account whether those presenters would want to do a national bulletin - it is very different to a news channel. When do you see breaking news on BBC 1's news programmes? Hardly ever.

I agree with smw. Its unlikely that Maxine Mawhinney, Darren Jordan, Sian Williams & Jane Hill are all ill / doing other things. They most probably want to give all of their presenters on-air experience on National News, as one of them will need it when war breaks out. A very good idea too.
Dermot talking through the Thunderclaps reminds me of Nik Gowing on BBC World News. He doesn't pause for too long, but nearly always has too much to say in the 5 secs period!
