ITV News: new logo, new graphics

ITV is now beginning the process of rebranding, which therefore means a new ITV News logo in a couple of months.

In this set of mocks I've done what I think will probably happen - the current graphics just tweaked slightly to include the new logo, rather than a radical overhaul. The studio and titles will essentially remain the same, but with a few tweaks.

(NOTE: I know it's not the right font for the "itv", but this worked better for mocking than doing a cut and paste job on the ITV4 logo, so please ignore it!)


Firstly the ITV News logo:

Two shades of blue are used, with white text. Ignore the background - it's just there as a background!


Programme logos:

In a similar style, this logo is quite flexible and can be used for programme names. The regional news logos would be in this style, while for the main ITV News bulletins the logo would appear on the newswall in some studio shots, but the ITV News logo would appear in the titles.


Transparent:

From ITV4's logo it looks like the non-ITV part will be transparent. It works with this graphic, but I've tried it on others and astons etc. and it's doesn't look as good, so as far I'm concerned I'm sticking with my blue and blue logo!

On to the astons - as I said above these mocks are all about introducing the new logo with minimal changes.

News Channel: DOG, ticker, clock:

The DOG moves to the bottom left, above the clock/ticker. The date is dropped from the ticker.


Reporter aston:

Basically the same as now, but the ITV News logo is changed - appearing in the same place as the DOG on the ITV NC.

Again basically the same concept, but with a tweak. The LIVE part is now above the ITV News logo, something they've begun doing occassionally on the ITV1 bulletins, especially the Lunchtime News.


And that's it so far. As I said nothing radically - just a few changes as a result of the new logo.

I am currently working on a set of brand new astons that would work with the new logo above. Hopefully post them later tonight.

Sorry, the only reason I don't like this mock is it still reminds me of our current crappy graphics package.

As I said above these are about introducing a new logo without major changes, but I wasn't too keen with the astons so I went on to revamp them.

Headlines:

The headline strap, used during the titles and at the beginning of reports on the Evening News. It appears as it does now, but when it goes off screen it breaks into lines rather than squares.

Originally I did this in white, but I think the blue looks better - judge for yourself here.

Reporter aston for the main ITV News bulletins. The ITV News logo is positioned where the NC DOG appears, but I'm not sure about so perhaps it be best without it.

A few changes on the ITV News Channel. The graphic on the aston is bigger to include a headline, with the main aston moved to the right. The LIVE / Location strap is also different, animating so it switches between "LIVE" and "Location".

Pretty self explanatory.


And that's that. As I said above it's about tweaking and updating rather than revamping. I would have a few minor changes to the studio though - mainly the catwalk would be carpeted, with the middle bit to the desk removed. A new desk would then sit on a circular platform in front of the newswall.

The CSO backdrop would also change, and they'd also be a few variations, for example a newsroom - and a London skyline in the style of the Big Ben used in the titles for the 10.30pm bulletin.

As for the titles - basically the same but with a few tweaks. You'll need a bit of imagination:

Opening Graphic (as now): BONG - first headline, then cut to studio for description.

MAIN TITLES: as the main part of the current titles, but the new ITV News logo forms at the end and then we have a voiceover "ITV News with..."

They then go "Also tonight... BONG" then after the rest of the headlines the final part of the titles (where the logo currently forms) is replaced with a wide shot of the studio with the programme logo forming on the news wall.

Scheduling wise - they are still restricted by sharing studios, but for the ITV News Channel rather than changing presenters midway through the hour, I think it be better if they went to the second studio from 11am, 5pm and 9pm.

Much Better, but before anyone has a go at you, you spelt Correspondent wrong, simple mistake to make, by the way it sounds.

Well, sometimes even ITV News make spelling mistakes!!!


Funny you should say that actually - it's something I questioned when I wrote it but didn't bother to check it!

Where is the help in that? If you've got no comment to make, then make none at all.

Thought I'd comment on these now. I like how you've slightly refreshed the style, so in that respect it works. This isn't a full blown redesign (which is probably what is coming), but it still works quite well. One thing I hate is the block shadow on the 'Breaking News' and general story straps.

Make the shadow blurred so it seems more natural, the block shadow looks rather tacky. Also, the text in the information strap (for both normal and breaking news) should be resized so it doesn't look like it is breaking out of the box.

Apart from that, good effort!

Another well done ITV News mock; you have obviously thoroughly thought up where everything should be laid out, to really good effect. Particularly like the subect aston, with the globe in background, and the red 'Breaking News' is really attention-grabbing and another good idea.

Niceto see you've taken safe areas into account as well.

I take your point about the shadow. My graphics package (if you can call it that!) sometime does odd things when you convert things to JPEG, one of which saw the shadow become bigger than I'd originally done it. Might have a look at it later - personally I think the text in the "Breaking News" straps needs to be a bit bolder too.


As I said this isn't a full blown redesign, but I'm not expecting a full blown redesign - I think they'll just make a few tweaks as a result of the new logo.

During the last incarnation of ITV News the astons were only tweaked a few times, the bigger being when the ITV News Channel launched with the use of the "ITV News" blue and yellow logo on the astons - despite it not being used in the titles on ITV1 or the ITV News Channel!

I'm not even going to attempt a 3D mock (though if Lee S or anyone else wants to try, feel free!) but this is an overhead plan of how I'd adapt the ITV News studio.

As I said this is about minor changes, not major - so it's the same "Theatre of news" based around the newswall - but with a couple of tweaks!

The main news desk moves from the centre and is rotated and placed to the right, making room for a smaller second area on the left handside at the other end of the catwalk.

This area could be used as a "soft set" for interviews and features such as The Pulse, and also be used with a podium instead for things such as the sport report on the 10.30 bulletin.
