So in other words, the number one had already been decided, and the votes during the programme counted for nothing. I wonder how much money ITV made from the phone/text lines in this little scam?

The last half hour was very poor - it have been better of it the votes had all been counted before the show.
They went through 10-6, then rather than reveal the top five clip by clip, they had extended clips of each "Shot" - the top clip in each category (rather than the top five overall), all fronted by someone campaigning for that shot.
After some football game from 1966, the Boxing Day Tsunami and 9/11, we had a break - then returned with clips of the Man on the Moon and Kennedy's assisination - with the lines closing immediately after the Kennedy segment - so viewers were not given the opportunity to watch the five clips then vote!
We then had the top five revealed in a quick countdown, and a live link up to New York where a gospel choir just happened to be waiting to sing us out!
