So there isn't neccessarily going to be a change then. Besides it's hardly good value for money if they are scrapped after just three years.
No, but were they ever good value for money? Even though he said may I think that was just because he probably didn't want to commit to anything. If he intended to leave the dancers as they were he probably wouldn't have said anything

DANCING IS TO STOP ON BBC1
BBC1 chiefs are to axe the controversial clips of dancers in between shows - but will not bring back its traditional globe logo.
They introduced the shots of young, ethnic, and disabled people dancing in March 2002 at a cost of £700,000.
The promos - known as idents - replaced BBC1's hot air baloon version of the spinning globe, which had been it's symbol since 1963.
The dancers and scenes of acrobats and rugby players were meant to reflect today's multicultural Britain.
But BBC1 controller Peter Fincham yesterday revealed there was change on the way.
He told the the Edingburgh TV Festival: "We are looking into this. It may well be that the time is coming to look at a new way of doing it."

Hmm, by the time a new look is commissioned and launched, it would be mid-2006 at the earliest surely. If we got a summer relaunch, that'd make the dancers over four years old, just short of the 4 years 5 months the balloon lasted. The balloon may have been iconic but it wasn't around for that long, even the COW only served 6 years.
As for a relaunch, would they risk too major a rebrand that may knock BBC One out of sync with the rest of the BBC portfolio of channels, i.e. their box logos. Maybe they'd just modify rather than replace the present look though you never know, every channel controller is bound to have that urge to make their mark and we did predict the demise of the dance some time ago.

Didn't Channel 4 unveil their new look on New Year's Eve 2004? I know that's when C4 News changed their look slightly.
It's very good news that the BBC1 idents are under review. They were horrible to begin with, and they have grown increasingly boring. They definitely haven't remained fresh as time has gone by. Despite that article from The Sun saying that the globe isn't going to make a return, I really hope it does in one way or another.

Well I remember when in February 1991 BBC1 and BBC2 unveiled their new looks which I thought was an odd time but we could get it quite soon. They should have done it this year with a launch when the autumn season starts. Incidentally when did Channel 4 launch their new idents?

Yeah, Channel 4 did relaunch their on-screen graphics on New Years Eve, with Channel 4 News fully relaunching a few days later.
Boring is a very good word to describe the BBC 1 idents. Even "Chavs" has bored me now and to be honest are they really worth £700,000? It seems theres already a little tweak of the current graphics on other channels as well. BBC 2 recently brought in their new "two words" one and BBC 3 have also had a few new ones added, namly the Now, Next and Later one.
I suppose it was always on the cards that a new cotroller would want to stamp his mark on things so lets hope he has good taste...

I've noticed the "African" one has been aired quite alot recently. But IMHO doesn't really work at all.
The problem with live action idents with people in them is they date quickly (hair, fashion, etc.) where as symbols such as BBC2's "Big 2" or the current Channel 4 & 5 symbols will last for quite a while.
Although I wish they would vary the colours of the 2's

Yes, those African fashions have changed dramatically in the last 18 months.

Probably by 2006 BBC Two will be thinking about having a relaunch aswell, as by then the current look will be 5 years old. So it may happen that there is a blanket relaunch over all the BBC channels by then, and the removal of the channel 'boxes'.

There was a rumour that there would a major cross-channel rebrand sometime around 2008, to coinside with the big move, but maybe someones had a little re-think and pushed the date forward. Would be nice to bannish the boxes...
