ABC News isn't ready to let the late Peter Jennings go just yet, saying its nightly news program, "World News Tonight With Peter Jennings," will retain that title for the near future. But Jennings' death Sunday from lung cancer raises complicated succession questions for the news division, which has poured its energy into helping Jennings fight the disease.

That is just stupid. The man is dead, so what on Earth is the point of including his name in the opening credits?

Whilst he was ill I could understand it, because he supposedly still had some input into the show, but if ABC are suggesting he is contributing beyond the grave in any real way they are slightly deluding themselves.

I appreciate they are devastated by what's happened, but if it's their idea of a tribute to him then it seems slightly inappropriate.

Charles Gibson did an excellent job on the programme last night, by the way.

Well that it the name of the programme.

It's was not

"World News tonight" with Peter Jennings,

it was

" World News Tonight with Peter Jennings" presented by Peter Jennings

Very bizarre but that's the way Americans do things. I was a bit disappointed they didn't replace the usual introduction, "This is World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, tonight with Charles Gibson, Peter Jennings is on holiday" with ""This is World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, tonight with Charles Gibson, Peter Jennings is dead"

The whole thing was a bit self indulgent. Fine for a tribute programme, but to devote almost the entire programme! Jennings would have asked where the news was.

Would ITV or BBC devote as much time in the main evening news if one of there presenters Died? I cant remember what the BBC done in the case of Jill Dando thought the two deaths cannot be linked.

It may well be that ABC don't have versions of the titles WITHOUT Peter Jennings on them... It's a bit like "Tonight with Trevor MacDonald" - the show's name is based around the person, it isn't a "presented by" issue...

I suspect they'll keep the Peter Jennings titles until they appoint a new anchor - though they'll need to be reasonably quick about it.

IIRC, Bob Shieffer (CBS) is still stand-in anchor/managing ediot after dan rather, and dan has been gone since march

Don't want to change the main purpose of this thread, but I would like to see Elizabeth Vargas become the new presenter. Although whoever gets the job will have a difficult task following on from someone like Peter.

What he said re Elizabeth Vargas - bout time we had a credible female anchor. Tie that in to seeing Karin on overnight news 24 and you've got a reason to be an insomniac like me now that MLB on Wednesdays has gone to C425

I'm getting Freesat damnit
