Can I just remind people that constructive criticism of people in the media is one thing but childish comments and making up what I'm sure individuals concerned would believe to be offensive names can be classed as deformation of character. You may find it funny but people can be genuinely upset by that sort of humour.
I was at the gym the other day and they had BBC One on one of the TVs with subtitles and the lunchtime addition of Wales Today came on. The subtitles were coming in blocks, so they had obviously been done before the show, however when Jane Case linked to Derek for the whether there was some banter and that came up on subtitles in the same way.
Does this mean that WT at lunchtime is recorded or do they script the banter?

SMW
Unless there is a live interview, there is very little on a news bulletin that isn't scripted. The main evening WT subtitles come on in blocks, presumably they're copied in some way from the autocue, but the reports are usually done live -- and of course this is true with a live interview. Obviously that would be too costly for a lunchtime programme, so I'm sure they transferred the script to subtitles in a similar way. I'm sure the bulletins are live though.
It's my opinion that banter with Derek is scripted. You can tell, by the times when a joke is trying to be made, it sometimes goes wrong, and they stutter and push home a line as if it were script. And the "banter" and joke is very directly related to the weather, so it would seem a little convenient if it weren't unscripted. The links between Sara and Derek can seem a little awkward sometimes, but once Derek's off on his own, I'm sure none of that's scripted!

oooooooooooooooooo sorry asa!
i didnt realise that that post contravened tv forum rules!
I had only summed up the three nick-names that OTHER people had called certain HTV news readers in this thread already!
I hadnt written anything that hadnt been said already!
Just a quote of quotes!
If you feel that its bad you must go back and delete the other posts otherwise i will re-it-er-ate all the names again!
Im sure you will come to the senseable conclusion on this one!
Either Asa came in here out of interest [which I doubt, since this thread, although the longest in the main forum, is *certainly* the most uninteresting to non-Welsh people], or a post was reported.
Whatever the occasion, the only names to my knowledge are Sour Cow [Catherine Evan-Williams] and Sadsack [Andrew Jones]. Anyone who has knowledge of HTV News would concur that these names are appropriate, but I agree, they are childish -- and we should desist from using them from now on.
Quite what Jez calls Ruth Wignall is his own business though, I don't agree with that!
And Horseworthy is a play on Richard's real name, Nosworthy.
I guess all of it is a bit childish, who's to say we're not still children at heart, and don't still make up silly names for people on the TV we don't like so much. But I agree, on a public forum, it's irresponsible, and I shall stop from now on.

Sorry Asa and anyone else who I may have offended. I just dont like Ruth thats all, OK myabe I shouldnt say such nasty things about her but id rather be honest than say I like her and she is my fave which I did say once!
Other people call Catherine Evan-Williams a "sour cow" and Wiggy an "oddball" and Dillwyn was called stuff too so I am saying nothing worse about Ruth than they have said but again im really sorry.
From now on I guess we'll have to use the real name i.e. Cath, Arfon, Nosworthy, Andrew etc.
Maybe Ruth came on here and reported the post! Sorry Ruth its nothing
Getting this back onto the subject of HTV News and does anyone know who read it yesterday? Im at my brothers in the midlands this weekend so I caught Central News at 5pm yesterday followed by Central Weather with Charlie. But who did the news for Wales?
