No doubt there will be an emergency services news conference at around 10:30 - 11:00pm

In his constituency I expect. Not that there is anything he can do about the incident.

Make a statement - after all Network Rail - the owner of the level crossing - is his responsibility

ITV NC finally has some recorded pictures from the scene.

And what will that statement achieve exactly? No doubt he will send condolences to the bereaved, praise the emergency services and promise a full inquiry, which is all right and proper, but I don't think we can reasonably expect anything other than the predictable words at this stage.

A statement to say what? It's MUCH too early for statements.

Although this probably has nothing to do with maintenance, how many more Train crashes will it take before the Government take notice?

There is nothing to indicate so far that this incident was in any way caused by deficiencies in the railway network or its operations. Accidents will always happen and the fact is - despite the high-profile lapses in recent years - that rail has an excellent safety record.

It would be more useful to ask when people will take notice of the number of people who die on Britain's roads every day.

Well put. Someone on I think ITV News Channel pointed out there were 10 fatailites a DAY on Britain's road network. Yet you have to go back a few years to find a single railway death.

That is wrong - For starters, two people died at my local train station a few months back. I take it you did not watch 'Whistleblower' the other day either?

You might have to go back a few years to find a death on the railway that has been publicised, but the truth is many railway engineers are killed every week.

As I had already said in my previous post, this probably has nothing to do with the maintenance of the railways, but the truth is our railway network is NOT safe, and not maintained very well at all.

Em this is hardly an incident like your suggesting. Your suggesting that there WAS a fault with the line somewhere - Whether it be signal, track etc. You've been told enough to know this isn't true.

Another thing, being realistic, how safe can it be having hundreds of tonnes of metal flying at 100mph? Do you suggest we end rail travel all together.

HOW MANY MORE TIMES?!?!?!

Excuse me rude. "but the truth is our railway network is NOT safe, and not maintained very well at all."

Sorry to keep quoting, but the truth is, our railways aren't safe! I meant it as a seperate comment from this story. Sorry if you misunderstood what I was trying to say. Can we all be friends again now? Lol.

The railways are a safe form of travel! And they cannot be blamed for a vehicle being on the line when it shouldn't be!

Sky have captioned one eyewitness as a "Survivor".

Another annoying misjudgement by Sky News....surely somebody in the Sky News Centre must also get p!ssed off by the sensationalism of such statements. Why do they never change.

Em are News 24 repeating coverage or is this actually Live. Last thing I saw Jane Hill was in the studio - she's now .... vanished.

I note that News 24 have had a ticker running for ages but whilst Sky still insist on using that area of the screen for the 'press red' and 'text us' stuff, they haven't got anything else.

Excellent coverage from Radio Berkshire once their programme began at 8pm - lots of reporters out and about, and radio car at the scene and the hospital.
