Oh good God, where do I start! Shocked
By the way I was brought up there till I was about 10 and have been a few times since, just to check if what I remember is true, and hell it certainly was.

It's a horrible place, in my experience -- the people are nasty and spiteful, very insular, they turn their backs on you, they're hateful to English people, and even to people from the next county along.. The main towns in the middle of the county, Carmarthen and Ammanford are going *nowhere* -- they're stale and produce similarly stale people. I hate the place sooooo much. Most young people I know couldn't wait to leave there either, and did.

I can't speak so much for Llanelli.

The coastline is, however, lovely -- as are the castles. But soon as you come inland to the many farms and weird backwater towns with horrible inward mentality, it's soul destroying. It's the only place in Wales that's worse than Anglesey, and my word that's saying something!

I must admit TV Dragon, even though you’re perfectly welcome to have your own comments and views they are very controversial and possibly upsetting for people who may come from that county. I am not from there so I can’t comment but I’m sure they’re not all like that, I know two people from Carmarthenshire and they are nothing like what you have described so maybe some of your claims are very unjustified. And from your previous posts you seem to be a sensible person but I never took you to be narrow minded.

And before you say it, I’m not taking it personally, as I have no reason to, but I’m just sticking up for people who can’t defend themselves. Wink

I'm not narrow-minded, just extremely disturbed by the place. As I said, the young people, like me, in my experience, dislike the place as much as I do -- I'm assuming the people you know are young as well. But sadly, the shopkeepers, the teachers, and other adults in the towns of Ammanford and Carmarthen aren't very nice people. And don't get me started on their Welsh-medium education system..

I daresay some of them are nice, especially younger people -- who may have a bit more experience of the outside world than those brought up there years ago, and who have rarely left -- but coming from the area, I have *first hand* experience of it, and this is my qualification for passing judgement. I wouldn't do this on anywhere I don't know *very* well, but unfortunately I know central Carmarthenshire too well, and know this to be true, as do a lot of people my age.. I'm not alone in this belief.

You say you're not from there -- with all respect, you therefore wouldn't know. Where you're brought up has a significant impact on your life when you're young. It's only when you mature and get a bit older that you realise that the way people are back then *isn't* right at all, and I certainly do realise it about Carmarthenshire, I'm afraid.

Welsh people in general are really nice people, and I would defend them against most criticisms. But if someone took a holiday in Carms [yes, it has a tourism industry, for some reason] and came back to me and said they hated the place, the people were rude to them, and they never want to go back, I wouldn't argue and call them unfair for saying it -- because I would totally agree -- 10 years of my life agrees with them.

As far as I'm aware no-one else on this board comes from central Carms, if they have a different opinion, then fair enough. But I have said in both these posts, that it is *my opinion*, based on experience, and this qualifies me to be so blunt about the place.

Fair comment on the entire above TV Dragon. It just came over that you were having a go at the place for no reason, and as I stated I know two people from there and they are nothing like you described, but, as you have explained you have first-hand knowledge of the county and it's people.

So we will have to beg to differ on this one as I find the people I know from Carms very pleasant.

I was in Carmarthen last week and it seems to be full of old welsh ladies with those tartan shopping carts saying "dim diolch" all the time.

My mums side of the family comes from Carmarthen - so I still have quite a few relations there.

I prefer Pembrokeshire though - far more trendy Razz

This is what I'm keen to stress though, jamiet. I'm pleasant [honest! Razz], and so are my family really, and the friends I had in the place -- I think young people are more aware of the outside world much more than a generation ago [i.e. the adults and people of authority in towns and places], and so aren't quite so ignorant and insular as people before them.. That's natural progression and evolution of culture and society, and it's healthy.

As I say, I'm assuming the 2 people you know are young, or your age or whatever, and so are likely to be nice! And some older people are, but you know how a significant proportion of a town, or class at school/college, or workplace, whatever -- can spoil it for everyone and tarnish your impression of the place as a whole. It was, in fact, more than that. Ignorance breeds more ignorance, and I found that to be rampant in central Carmarthenshire.

I'd urge most people to leave where they live, for holidays, university, visiting places, whatever -- not necessarily permanently -- but it's important to experience other places and peoples and ways of life and attitudes -- it really will reveal any prejudices you may have had, or the place you live in have. This hits me in the face every time I've been back there.

Oh, that just sums up the whole place and its attitude, LOL -- "no thank-you!"

Pembs is nice, from the perspective of a non-native, and so is the county of Swansea, and the valleys -- people there would give you their last penny [if they had one that is, considering how poor some people are..] and they're a friendly bunch. My parents' generation are from the last valley along [Llynfi] -- but for some unknown reason decided to take us to Carms.. Confused

What has this got to do with Wales? Do you want me to answer that?

There are a couple of threads dealing with the demise of local programming currently alive, one of which I have posted in. This is a general Welsh presentation thread though, rather than that well-walked path, valid as it is.

Besides, I only explained by feelings on Carmarthenshire because a little jokey one-sentence comment by myself was questioned, and then I felt it appropriate to explain where it was coming from.

It's Sunday. Not much goes on in all honesty. I'm sure something will come up tomorrow to do with Welsh tv and programming and news, and it will all continue again as normal.

But really, there's no need to get so agitated. I suppose this is the TV forum, but the vast majority of this thread is about Welsh tv. If we do veer off a little into our real lives from time to time, I don't think that's so terrible -- we are human beings with other stuff to talk about occasionally.

Hehe. Well that's all right then..

Tell me, what does everyone think of Porthcawl? It's quite nice in the summer you know.. Anyone been to Llandudno? Not my scene, but the old dears love it. How many daffodils do we have in our gardens then? And who remembers Superted? And what's everyone's opinion on Welsh cakes? Me, I'm not fond.

Oh, all right it's not about Wales's tv.. Ummm, oh here -- have an ident ~

I have been to Porthcawl a few times with my mum and dad, always to the funfair, but they say Rest Bay is nice. Apparently at one time it had its own railway station too. I remember a member of my family telling me there was a nightclub that burnt down, they went to see a group called Peters and Lee there.

Oh, better keep it tv, here's another ident Wink
