George Alagiah should not be on the Six O'clock News.

He's a very good reporter.

But an absolutely dreadful presenter.

Get rid of him.

Suggestion have proper news until 9am then after that have the more 'fluffy' news and features. As after 9am News 24 reverts to rolling news so viewers have an alternative. At least wait until 8:30am before doing 'fluffy' news. I like the Breakfast Breifing but from memory a lot of the reports are pre-recorded rather than live due to it being 6am. Extending this format until 9:00am but having some live reports would be nice.

Is it just me or does he speak as if all his audience are 5-year olds?

I don't know what some people were expecting from Breakfast this morning. At the end of the day, some computers failed for less than an hour this morning, causing some delays until the early afternoon. If it was so important, News 24 would have been with it non-stop, and it would still be the top story. Instead, they covered it for a bit, then moved on to other news. At 17.00, it was the very last headline on News 24.

"some computers failed for less than an hour", yes, but several thousand people - if not tens of thousands - were affected during the course of the day as a result of it.

Granted, but you're missing my point. There might have been tens of thousands of people affected, but it isn't worthy of continuous coverage. What is there to say? Computers failed, delays of 2 hours tops. That really was the extent of the situation. Breakfast, in my opinion, had the right approach - keeping dipping in to the story as and when there are more details. I really wouldn't want endless vox pops with stranded passengers, just for the sake of it. I'd rather them get on with other news, then go back to it later to update further.

As for people saying they want the news in the morning, surely you want a full digest of news, rather than knowing a copius amount on just one story? Breakfast would draw criticism if it were to abandon everything for one story, and a relatively minor one at that. It's hardly as if a bomb had gone off, killing thousands of people. When there's so little to say, you can hardly sustain the one story for three hours!

I'm not saying I am in favour of Breakfast's format - I agree that returning to the 2000-2002 style would be better, but I only give criticism where it's due.

If News 24 had been on it's own in it's studio and this story broke, they would have given it more coverage than Breakfast did - as did the other two news channels. This shows up the fact that Breakfast operates at best a watered down news service compared to News 24.

Fair points, however in my experience Breakfast is failing to even give a headlines roundup every 15 minutes - meaning I'm not even getting the digest of news that I am promised 24/7.

And granted this story has decreased in importance as the day as worn on - however N24 were not "shouting" as the relaunched promised us. This is as much a complaint with their graphics though, as anything. They seem to have been getting a lot better with keeping BN banners up for longer than a few seconds - but times like this morning are prime examples why there is still room for improvement.
I'm tempted to say that, had the BN banner been up and the ticker is used properly, then the criticisms being made on here, would be answered. This, I guess, would mean Breakfast adopting the News 24 graphics set. In which case bring it on!!!

Agreed. Having given this some thought I agree with both itsrobert and japitts. Before I go to work, I want a quick round-up of what's happened overnight and what's happening now.

If News 24 was on air proper from 6-9 and a story such as this morning's broke I would get continuous coverage of this and little else. I'd be on here moaning about that!

I think japitts has the answer to Breakfast's problems. It should take on the News 24 graphics so breaking news could be better illustrated and they should leave the headlines ticker on permanently - all this while the fluffy stories carry on in the background.

A low cost solution - and then I'd be happy!!!

He is like Ned Flanders. Sort of.

At the end of the report on the death of Frances Shant Kyd (spelling?) Princess Diana's mother, for simplicity, he chirped "Alright then! Let's get some weather!" as if entirely oblivious to the subject matter just being discussed.

Then at the end of the weather, even though there was nothing remotely funny, he laughed and said "ha... ok, thanks for that!"

Is he on prozac or something?

Yep, sounds like a fair deal to me! If they'd just leave the "culture" (broad term there!) items till either after 09.00, by which time News 24 will have gone its own way, or at the very least from 08.45. It would be better if they moved back to the 2000 format - a proper desk which could be used until the lighter items come on; quarter heads rather than 'coming up' all the time, and generally a more serious programme. After 09.00, they could move to a softer set (sofa et al) to cover the lighter stories, and accomodate studio guests.

Despite how much I like Moira Stuart, I have often wondered what the point of a Breakfast newsreader is! Wouldn't it be easier for the two presenters to do all the news with packages rather than just a summary?

Overall:

*.00 - *.15 - News
*.15 - News headlines & coming up
*.16 - Weather followed by news in brief
*.23 - Business
*.27 - Regional News
*.30 - News summary
*.35 - Sport
*.45 - News headlines
*.46 - lighter news stories
*.55 - Regional News

That would be for the hours 06.00 - 09.00. When I say lighter stories at *.46, I mean actual packages, not the studio guests being interviewed on a film release. That would be saved for after 09.00. I was thinking more along the lines of the lighter stories that are trailed on World and News 24 throughout the day, e.g. a report on the state of the UN headquarters yesterday.

Looks like News 24 have messed up in the TOTH titles again! The globe spinned from Africa instead of America and the top story was about the resignation of the CIA Chief George Tennett!

Did anyone else notice this?

I think you should put that in your signature, it'll save you typing it on every post, after all you need your hands free at the TOTH for other things don't you.

During the TOTH titles yesterday @ 16.00 the music was much more boomy, it sounded like they beefed up the bass! I think they should do this more often as the music would sound more dramatic!

Has anyone ever noticed, when they use the generic, no headline titles, with the bbc logo going around the music, and images for that matter always seem so how so much better, than the "fadded" normal ones
