Yep, they sure did.....but that wasnt a design change, just a cock-up correction....

Sky did this with the last relaunch.

The blue straps that have just been replaced (the big ones, not the ticker ones) originally had a red circle with an 'i' spinning round on them... presumably "information" or something. They soon realised that the 'i' did not animate properly with the animating text, and modified that; then realised that they could fit about four words on with it stuck there. So it went after the first day.

Same with the phone animation. The phone graphic they used to us/possibly still do - that white digital keypad - used to animate, with the buttons going up and down. Alas no more.

They also did various other little tweaks along the way, like the location bit of the Live bug originally being white and the idents first having a more flat logo (like in the new ones).

Despite there not being any major relaunch, pretty much everything except the logo, from graphics to set to music, has completely changed since the current look started in 2001. A bit like BBC News since '99, really.

As for other places changing things after a few days, when the ITV Evening News started in '99, Sir Trev spent half the programme standing up, and there was a regular American style In Focus-type feature. I'm sure it didn't last the first week or two.

The "Sport Report " sting on the new News at 10.30 was dropped after the first day too I think

Got to say the titles are really nice and fresh. Any captures?

Some interesting comments from Dawn Airey in today's Media Guardian:
Quote:
The next big task is investing in Sky News with plans she "can't talk about right now" but which involve trying to create more of a difference between News 24 and Sky News. "It's done a fantastic job and continues to be market leader but BBC 24 does, in bog standard news days, sometimes come a bit too close to our ankles and we are making a significant investment in Sky News."

Sounds like good news for Sky News. Hopefully some of this investment will go directly into journalism, and not all be spent on new gadgets.

I saw the Breaking News strap the other day for the first time since the refresh, and I notice it hasn't changed at all. They really need to do something to distinguish it from the regular straps (apart from the fact that it's bigger). Something similar to the 'coming up' strap would be quite good - at least it would be attention-grabbing and look much tidier than it is now.

I think the investment will mostly be in journalism... the type of journalism, however, is the issue.

The move towards opinion-orientated shows of Fox's genre (even though Littlejohn has been a ratings disaster) is inevitable. That's possibly because Littlejohn is a bad presenter and the agenda of the show is roughly: tax, asylum, tax, asylum, silly jobs, tax, asylum.

I guess we can expect any changes to begin next year, when the new studios go into operation. Of course, she might've meant just that - there haven't been any public announcements about new studios yet.

I wish they'd get rid of the static ticker at the bottom of the screen, there's at least 3 Sky News logos on screen at any one time when that's on, and it blocks part of the Weather Sponsorship sting.

Yes I'm not entirely convinced of the usefulness of the static ticker. Surely even a UK city weather report could tick along there if they have to have some more screen clutter during the evenings and overnights? Rolling Eyes
