I dont know if sometime you've been over this BUT I was wondering... (here we go)

Is there any possibility that Sky News or any other news channel could start showing more programmes instead of just news?

For example Sky News to launch a second news channel showing more documentaries by reporters, and it's own shows like a British version of Larry King where a presenter introduces a guest who takes calls on a certain subject.

Maybe even comedy like a Bremner, Bird and Fortune type show, even stretching to show a Judge Judy kind of programme - not actually Judge Judy, but something similar.

Is it possible in the future, or is it pure crap and should I just put the thought out of my head this instant?

I doubt they will launch a second channel, but certainly Sky have in the past had shows like Larry King. It is only the past few years that they have moved away from shows like this.

I have always thought that something like HIGNFY would work well on a news channel, but not sure that anyone is brave enough to try it.

I've always thought there's been room for a mainstream topical factual channel, with a mix of chat, documentries, phone-ins, satire, live up-to-date programmes on technology, showbiz, sport, money as well as a few main news bullitens and the ability to go to breaking news.

Trouble is, it'd be much too expensive. It would have made a good channel five, perhaps.

It'd also be a nice idea to have a Sky News 2, with a relationship like CNN and Headline News, but again it wouldn't really be worth it for them.

I doubt even UKTV or the Beeb would be brave enough to invest in such a channel. The sad thing is, I wouldnt mind watching such a channel!

Well CNNi have The Daily Show - "satirical comedy" - but in truth it's fairly low brow not without gay jokes and fairly America-centric jokes.

It sounds strange when they both have the same surname.

I think News 24 have got the evening analysis and debate market sealed up now, and I see little chance of Sky being able to match its quality (btw, Littlejohn doesn't amount to analysis and debate- it's more comment and provocation).

They do?

As far as I can see, News 24 don't have any thing in the prime time slot that amounts to "analysis".

There's Hard Talk, but that's on at about half past eleven, there's (I think) a very short and very crap business programme, and an even shorter sports programme... I don't think that this seriously amounts to the sorts of genres the US networks are putting out - shows devoted to politics, justice, debate, serious business news, etc.

I know you like News 24, and you know I hate it, but it's just exceptionally wide of the mark to say that News 24 have the prime time analysis slot anywhere near 'sealed up'.

And that's the typical Osterley thinking that's gifting News 24 more and more viewers- why does analysis have to be sidelined to exclusive "analysis shows"? If you've been watching the new look News 24 in the evenings you would have noticed an increasing use of studio discussions within the news hours- with up to three contributors in the studio/via satellite link-ups at the back end of each hour. This breaks up repeatedly reading out the same news and are often very interesting and sometimes entertaining- Jon Sopel in particular appears to shine in this capacity as "chair". But Sky News don't seem to understand that analysis can occur at the news desk (I don't think cheap powerpoint newswall presentations cut the mustard either).

Oh, and the "very short and very crap business programme" is actually Business Today which runs for about 20 minutes after the headlines at 10:30pm.....given Sky News' pathetic committment to business news, I hardly think a dedicated business bulletin in primetime is to be laughed at- shows how little you actually watch News 24 before passing judgement on it- you should give it a go, because as the figures show, you'd be joining a growing crowd.

I'm assuming you mean Alexa - the host of the internet archive, which is most likely being used as the 404 which most likely means all the links are dead Smile

Why have all of you forgotten about BBC World, now I know it's "not available" in the UK but it is a News channel that has News TOTH and then back half hour programmes such as Click Online, Holiday, Reporters, Top Gear, This Week, etc. Indeeed many of the programmes on News 24 are World originations. So next time you're abroad check it out .... can get a bit repetitive though. Very Happy

I've always found it amusing how the intro voiceovers sound like they've been cobbled together by a similar technique used on those automated phone lines .....

.... you HAVE selected OPTION 2 that is the matrix AT screen 4 odeon HIGH street .............

But that is how its done! The names of the presenters are saved, and announcements made from them. You dont think the guy sits in the gallery and speaks every hour do you...
