Hmmmm, but more graphics does not equal more substance, as you can see by watching ITV News.
I agree - what ITV News is now doing with graphics is over-kill. However, what I'm suggesting isn't too over-the-top, I don't think, and it would not have to be used all the time. Each one could simply display the nine video-screens that they do now, and only be used as shown when there is breaking news. I just think having this kind of arrangement would make the newsroom more flexible, and make it feel more intergrated with the studio.

Nobody said it did - it's just another design element that could be used...
Great mock! It would make the newsroom even more integrated with what it actually going on... GREAT idea benjy

It's a good design, but I think N24 has enough for breaking news now - the massive bright red aston, and the breaking news splash, which is aimed to capture attention, which it certainly does. I was a bit sceptical at first about having a splash, but I think it works nicely now. The only problem is that they need to use it more! Sometimes it's used for the most minor of breaking news, whilst when there's an explosion somewhere, it is often not used. Does it just depend who's directing, or is there a policy for using it?

That is very subtle though, it reminds me of the Iraq War changes to the old studio when all the LCD screens changed to the Iraq logo. I think it would be good as it can be hard to notice if you miss the sting. Maybe changing the plasmas to the old type logo from NOL could work.

I don't think it is a 'proper' news special - both channels did their own thing for about 10 minutes from the TOTH, but they've just joined up for a bit of coverage of the US primaries. Looks like it's being directed by World, as the astons is a bit lower than the 24 tower.
In fact, as I write this, it's just finished, and Mishal has handed back to London.

Fine as it is. The splash and sting are there to make you look at the screen if the TV's on in the background. It certainly works, the whole screen turning red - if only for a couple of milliseconds - makes you look up.
If you miss the splash (because you're out of the room, just switching on, or whatever) then you'd check the screen anyway as soon as you can see it and would notice the wiping Breaking News banner.
One thing that I do think should be tweaked is the colour of the normal straps. Either tone them down or change the BN strap to orange or something so as to differentiate. Often you can't tell the difference until the text wipes off and BN wipes on.
Edit: Or, you could have the globe stay onscreen after the splash with BBC NEWS 24......BREAKING NEWS..... flying round it...

...and the globe could 'sink' back into the Tower after it had finished.

I've also noticed that when the BN strap appears during reports etc, the splash & sting are not used. It's only when the presenters return after the report that it's used. I don't see why it can't be used during reports to draw attention. The sound isn't that loud so it wouldn't really interfere with the report either?

Agreed. It needs to be used every time a story breaks.
To me, the Breaking News graphics should be run totally independant to the rest of the channels output. If there's Breaking News, put the graphics up!
