The Freeview news multiscreen has just had a minor update: now has white instead of cream on the active screen (someone really doesn't like cream!).

Are you saying that the 'latest' on the orange bit changes? Not seen this.

Yes, today they've been running details of the pre-budget speech with "economy" in the orange bit, then it twizzled round to show "Soham". Could do with a slight gap on the ticker to differentiate between the two sets of stories though really.

Dunno if it's been mentioned because this thread has increased hugely since I last looked. But the globe with the dog/clock is now rotating the right way. Wink

Sky have a special budget programme from Westminster, News 24 don't because... shock horror, BBC2 is covering it. This is the problem it's always going to have. It can't be an independent, stand alone news channel like it has to be to operate decently, because it's ability is diluted.

But that surely can't be a bad thing? People have the ability to watch a special budget programme on BBC Two freeing up the news channel to concentrate on other things. That, to me, is more of a blessing for the viewer than Sky who only have the one channel and have to squeeze everything on (even with their interactive service). Either way, there isn't a solution so I think the choice should be welcomed not restricted (or pointlessly duplicated if N24 were to do a similar special programme).

What benefit does having 'lives' all the time serve? If a 2-way done an hour earlier is just as relevant now then what's the point dragging the journalist to a camera to spiel off the same thing? Their time is better served dealing with various other BBC News departments that require their insight or, better still, actually spending time getting information from the scene. The number of times a reporter has come on-screen, been asked "what's the latest" and saying "nothing new" is regular, and pointless.

(By the way, I'm waiting until Friday when I can see the new look on a TV before I comment. Thanks to everyone who's taken the time to upload clips to this thread though!)

Yeah, mentioned on a previous page BB. So the DOG has been changed, wonder if they'll bother on the titles? The DOGs probably quicker to change.

And just to go back to a previous comment, why on earth is BBC Four News changing? It's a great set, great title sequence, fits in with the overall branding package and is barely 18 months old! Completely pointless (and waste of money) when the BBC One bulletins haven't been touched yet.

Er, the globe on the new titles has always rotated the correct way.

Well, this is a SKYnews/FOXnews fan posting here... so here is my conclusion.

I watched SKYnews before the relaunch, but decided to give BBCnews 24 another try. Well, lets just say I no longer watch SKYnews.

Why?

- The N24 on screen graphics are clear, neat, professional and tidy. Looking back at SKYnews, the red hurts my eyes and it looks a mess.

- N24 has a more 'active and cutting edge' feel to it. More live reports and interviews. More studio interviews etc. Varied and wide ranging breaking news comparable if not superior to SKY.

- The studio is a pleasure to look at.

- NO ADVERTS. The amount of times I turn back to SKYnews to see how they are covering a story and I see adverts is incredible.

- The studio and presentation methods seem to be encouraging the presenters to be a little less wooden on N24. I can see it improving still further, but it still maintains the professionalism I expect from a news channel. Watching SKYnews is painful sometimes with forced jokes.

- International news segment! SKYnews is seriously lacking here. I think N24 might want to make another segment in the evening.

- NO ADVERTS.

- Regional news. Yes, it might not be entirely relevant to me, but I like to know whats going on. Plus it makes SKYnews repeating of the SAME news all the time appear very stale indeed. N24 might want to think about making a regional news half hour at some point, where they jump around the different regions... scotland, northeast, northwest, midlands etc and maybe show one main report (produced locally) and summarise the next two stories in brief before jumping to the next region. Get a nice overview of whats going on beyond anything that SKYnews could offer. Perhaps do this while there is news on BBC1?!

- NO ADVERTS.

Did I mention?

- NO ADVERTS.

I still see plenty of ways that BBC N24 could improve, but I dont see how SKYnews can honestly rival them if they fully call on all their resources. If anyone wants to know what further improvements I would suggest, just say.

Thanks for reading.

Could someone tell me whether there are adverts on News 24 please?

I'm getting used to it now, although I still have my reservations about some bits. Particularly the animation on and off of the DOG - it looks so comedic when it's not supposed to be, and in fact the DOG itself is just ugly and tramples the style of the aston.

Bit odd for the Monkey to pick up on that one, it's hardly an unusual mistake is it?!

At a totally random hour, and my first time to see the relaunched News 24, apart from for a few minutes on Monday morning, heres a comparision between Sky and News 24 in terms of news.
However this doesnt really show to much as its an untypical hour because of budjet reaction, but here it is anyway.

Watching BBC News 24 on Freeview and Sky News on Sky Digital. Using one TV and doing other things on the internet at the same time so I have proberbly missed a few things:

Moz: Give it a rest, my love, you're getting a bit tedious.

Interesting - let's go back a week:

On Mon 1 Dec, c@t posted:
My point - made a number of hours ago - remains: it is a wonder that anyone gives a sh-t.

BBC LDN then posted:
Well indeed - if you do ever find anyone that gives a sh-t about one of your points, please don't hesitate to keep it to yourself.

...but then c@t posted:
Why bother replying then? If my points are of, as you suggest, such little worth, follow your own guidance on the matter.

Then c@t started to bore everyone with another diatribe explaining how he had been right all along, and the rest of us were only now realising this and falling into line:

c@t posted:
What I find so wonderfully ironic is that these past few years I have been saying what a disastrous mess News 24 is: boring, lifeless, crap at breaking news. For years you have been disagreeing with me, defending it to the hilt. And yet just the other day, the woman in charge of the channel itself comes out and backs up everything I've said.

Remarkable. Truly remarkable.

...to which BBC LDN posted:
Dear God, you're boring.

at which point c@t got angry, and posted:
SO WHY REPLY?!?!? Good Lord.

...all of which leads back to c@t's somewhat schizophrenic approach to posting - villifying and mocking people for doing something, and then going ahead and doing it himself, seemingly oblivious to his glaring hypocrisy.

c@t posted:
Lambert did say more use of regional facilities - which, I have to say, I do not support. Regional news is such pointless thing to put on. If it has any significance to the nation as a whole, it isn't termed "regional". Quite why council taxes in the South West would be of interest to a national viewing audience is perplexing.

On the one hand, you measure the News 24 relaunch against the Lambert report, for example in criticising N24 for not being distinctive enough, and then criticise the relaunch for being little more than a cosmetic makeover failing to address the points made in the Lambert report. Yet on the other hand, such as with the issue of improved regional coverage, you now criticise N24 for adhering to Lambert.

Surely even you can see that breaking news from the regions, whilst not necessarily of nationwide interest, is providing a distinctive service, something inadequately covered by either Sky News or ITV News Channel? Why does news broken on N24 have to be in the 'national interest'? Should News 24 ignore the death of 100 people in a train crash in India because it is unlikely to be of direct interest to the United Kingdom as a whole? If News 24 breaks news of reasonable consequence to a region - as opposed to relatively inconsequential news such as the closure of a local post office - then I don't see what the problem is.

Not every news story will be of interest to every viewer. Many viewers will have no interest at all in business news, and the same goes for the sports updates. While some viewers will be fascinated by the report detailing advances in HIV/AIDS treatments, others will be far more interested in information about terror-related arrests across the country. It is more or a less a 'constant' that every news story will alienate a percentage of its audience, so reporting a story of regional interest is different only in the sense that its geographical location dictates who is more likely to be interested in the story. Regional news is not a "pointless thing" to broadcast, and while we all respect your opinion - no-one is saying that you have to like it - we would at least expect someone who clearly thinks of himself as a highly skilled debater to acknowledge its usefulness to other viewers, instead of deeming it pointless or inconsequential to everybody solely because you don't like it.

c@t posted:
There has to be - and has always been - a level of discretion with breaking news, even on Sky. Not all news is broken there and then. There are some stories that really do not deserve national attention - many of which News 24 reported on yesterday - and will never see the light of day on any appointment-to-view national bulletin or even national newspaper. In terms of national/international news stories that deserve airtime on news channels, Sky were ahead yesterday and have been ahead today.

This once again returns to the issue of News 24 providing a distinctive service. You constantly lambast N24 for copying Sky in every way, yet when we finally see the BBC start to distinguish itself from Sky, you have a pop anyway. c@t, you will get few arguments from other users here that Sky are ahead of News 24 - even after the relaunch - but most Forum members are objective enough to give credit where it's due. Your critique of News 24 since the relaunch has been tediously one sided. There have been many moments when News 24 has been worthy of praise, but you have shot them down as being poor imitations of Sky, or picking up on other minutiae and criticising them ad nauseam . There have indeed been many moments when N24 has all but fallen apart on air since the relaunch - last night I watched as the wrong headline images were played, the titles froze, the DOG failed to appear, and the view then switched between camera angles about eight times before finally settling on the correct shot. But from the start you have simply written the whole thing off as a massive failure, and you persist in returning to isolate each element of the channel and laboriously pick it apart.

We all love a good argument here, but when your arguments are as tediously one-sided as yours are, it takes the joy and the interest out of debating. When every point made against yours is greeted with personal attacks, selective interpretations, twisting of words or your oh-so-clever "I couldn't be bothered to read all that", the point of debate quickly evaporates.

c@t posted:
I reply because I genuinely enjoy having arguments, and think they make the place just a little more interesting. They give me a reason to read this place. I'll admit it... it's nothing to be ashamed of. I don't find them boring at all.

Then you just keep arguing away, but with the increasing blandness of your sarcasm, and the fact that most of the time now you simply ignore the topical points that people make, and go for the kill, I suspect people will tire of your arguments that you so enjoy, and simply agree with you to shut you up.
