There is a nice use of blue on the set from the BBC's coverage of France vs Scotland 6 Nations match.

A word for the highly polished presentation over three days for this year's ePL tournament, much smoother than before and the seven enthusiastic presenting team worked well together again.

Two lead presenters
Two analysts
Two commentators and
an interviewer.

Good to see the final session on both Sky and BT's main channels too.

Seems Channel 4 have ditched Sky Pen Interviews for F1 in favour of F1TV ones, with Lawrence Barretto joining the team as reporter. Also Alex Jacques as previously announced in November, in return Billy Monger joins F1TV for F2/F3 commentary.

F1TV are probably pooled for all rights holders, so therefore free. One wonders if Sky charged a small amount for usage last season.

Still don't understand why Sky Sports aren't using a small steadycam rig, or a gimble for the PSC cameras.
The argument was that a steadycam rig would take too much space in the pit lane, but with the broadcast media presentation mostly having to decamp to the paddock, there's now plenty of space to use one and stop the bouncy shots.

And (one for commseg) can you do the focus pulling on a steadycam remotely from the gallery/vision control in the scanner, to reduce the bodies in the paddock even further?

And off on a tangent - given F1 is one of the most technical designed sports in the world, they have some dreadful facemasks. Voices muffled, slipping down over the nose when talking, and the wearer forever pulling it back up to cover the face.

Just using handheld cameras gives them a wider pool of operators to draw from - and it’s less intensive than Steadicam or gimbal work for longer periods.
And yes, you can do longer distance remote focus pulling but it’s a bit of a faff. Many Steadicam ops can and do pull their own focus; you can get dual focus/zoom demands or a separate focus wheel which you clamp on the handle.

Sky have added in advert breaks between qualifying sessions which isn’t going down too well on Twitter.

In theory there is no reason why the focus couldn't be remotely controlled, however when it is done it is usually from a camera assistant operating next to the cameraman.
I suspect that the vision engineer, ususally looking after the racking of 4 cameras (plus other aspects of the OB) can't also look after the focus of one of them.
When you only have the shot they are offering too, rather than being able to anticipate what they are going to do, then the assistant next to the camera op can predict and accurately gauge what they will have in shot next.

People have short memories. It wasn’t that long ago ITV used to take ad breaks during the race. It was always interesting trying to determine what happened during the 5 minute breaks throughout the race.

The time between qualifying sessions was generally filler anyway so I don’t think the addition of ad breaks detracts at all from the coverage.

I think it’s the fact now after a couple of seasons of having exclusivity on almost all the live stuff they don’t need to try as hard as they would’ve in the past. I agree it’s no different to placing commercials in the natural breaks of other sports though. But the difference with ITV is, the fact viewers are paying the subscription for the product.

That’s the crucial factor - people (myself included) are paying significant amounts of money to see the coverage. As frustrating as that was on ITV at least it could be understood.

Rather than the gaps between qualifying being ‘filler, for those who are interested they’ll appreciate the analysis and driver interviews.

Perhaps it should be expected given right from the start they’ve taken ad breaks during practice sessions when there is actually action on the track.

The difference then being people weren’t paying circa £20 for the privilege of watching.

It makes the Channel 4 offering more attractive in that particular case. But we won't know what will happen with Sky's coverage during race day. Will they still keep it ad free or have advertising embedded in between the actual race? Maybe tomorrow could be interesting?

Re: F1TV Graphics for this year.

The F1 team logos on the live timings board in the top left of the screen look very unusual this year. They have a very glossy feel to them which makes them hard for the fans & casual viewers to read on screen when looking at them beside the driver's surname initials. Last years graphics did not have issue as you could have read them without any problem. You have both Mercedes & Aston Martin Cozignant both in Green which doesn't tell them apart when you are trying to see which driver is racing for which team.

I see there is new lower thirds showing the result & what tyres they used after the Q3 session was finished in Bahrain today. They were probably seen during the pre-season testing that was on Sky & afterwards on youtube. I think they look very neat.
