Noting the Early Evening News clip there - shows him much I miss a snappy 15 minute weekday bulletin. Less can be more. No over analysis. Just news. Imagine Peston fitting into that structure!

I have a hazy recollection in the ever dwindling daylight of TV Forum, I may have asked this before - but was that a manned PSC pan down, right and zoom move, or was it done with a fixed PTZ camera and controlled remotely?

They didn't cut off much though did they? The Editor credit was normally the last thing, I'm pretty sure there wasn't an 'ITN Production' caption at the end of the bulletins in those days.


I always found it curious that ITN bulletins have always had credits, but regular BBC news bulletins never have. I've never known why


Well, now here's an example of a News at Ten with an ITN end cap, and also a trigger hapy Thames.

That's from 1981, but you're right, a bit of You Tubing in the late 70s reveals no end caps

That's more just part of the titles though. The ITN logo of course being used throughout the programme presumably meant there was no need for a caption at the end

I almost always find the weekend news much better exactly for that reason - when they have a timeframe it is far more focused. It's also one of the reasons I was one of the few people who preferred the Nightly News over News at Ten. It won't happen but if C5 did happen to stick Eggheads at 6.30pm I think a 15 minute bulletin at 11pm would actually be a useful replacement and slot in their schedule nicely, though of course fail to meet any primetime news quotas. Newsbeat though does the 15 minute bulletin nicely on Radio 1.

Interesting for another reason. Early 1982 TVS had two clocks, one for the South, and one for the South East, so there was switchery to send the SE clock on those junctions to the SE transmitters.

Did the South clock say Television South or TVS South?

Did the South clock say Television South or TVS South?


TVS South. It was almost another 20 years, and required the invention of the internet before I got to see the SE version of the clock!
