Jane Hill just promoted a BBC News Special for today's Downing St press conference on BBC One 'for viewers in England' (and on the BBC News Channel) - has this happened before? Can't remember it occurring or seeing it mentioned here.

Understand the reasoning behind it - just not sure if it normally happens.

Should say that today it's the Health Secretary - I think it's normally only him or the PM who gets a slot on BBC One now?

Yep-When Gavin Williamson was on last week and Rishi Sunak on Wednesday both Press Conference's were news channel only so yes BBC1 only seems to take them when either Boris Johnson or Matt Hancock doing them

Which is wrong really, especially with schools and colleges reopening on Monday you would have thought it would warrant the Education Secretary being on BBC One! Same with the Chancellor.

Bizarre reasoning if that’s the case - there doesn’t appear to be any big/major announcements today so carrying Matt Hancock over Gavin Williamson announcing schools returning (considering were told this a top priority) and particular over Rishi Sunak on budget day (with details on how people may be affected financially with lockdown continuing, restrictions easing and what the post-pandemic financial outlook is) seems short sighted. And whilst we are in a pandemic, which changes priorities somewhat, the Chancellor is considering a more senior cabinet minister than the Health Secretary.

I suspect what Matt Hancock wants to talk about and what those asking questions want to talk about may be quite different today, hence perhaps why it is on BBC1 in England only.

Also means we've got BBC1 Scotland showing presumably what BBC2 was due to show with Wanted Down Under and Flog It considering they can't opt out of The Bidding Room/Pointless on BBC2.

I guess part of the issue is that if there is nothing really significant being announced, the line between government press conference and Tory party political broadcast becomes dangerously blurred.

I feel if JVT is on, it should be on BBC One, as he explains things very clearly and robustly quashes daft/scaremongery questions from the media

To be honest, it would be a lot better (and would completely de-politicise things) if he hosted the conferences alone !
Night Thoughts and Ittr gave kudos

I wonder if the Briefings will be slowly phased out in the coming months. I suspect the last one of all goes to plan will be in June.

Kate Silverton presenting the News at One and News channel afternoon shift today. Can't recall the last time she presented a News channel shift.

I was too scared to post exactly the same thing what with the presenter, rota talk ban....

Yeah I sat up alert when pres announced it was her, honestly thought she'd moved on having not seen her on air for months.

No there aren't being phased out, there being replaced by daily White House-style briefings at some point. Its also going to feature government minsters, I think the Wednesday one is likely to be lead by Johnson after PMQS

I suspect there are not going to airing on BBC One though or even the News Channel on a daily basis. Probably it'll be behind closed doors with snippets appearing on various outlets.

There's a special edition of Newsnight tonight on COVID-19 (possibly recorded). From the trailer, it won't be from the temporary studio.
