Or the 'them again' groan.
The Millionaire/Tipping Point/Mastermind/Chase/Pointless regulars.
Also, for the Covid thumbs up - I believe all players in this series must live together in the same household 'bubble'. So, that is going to reduce the number to zero of friends/workmates/social interest group teams of two that would usually be available for this type of show.

You and I may groan but being a game show regular lead to the likes of Mark Labbett and Jenny Ryan becoming Chasers on The Chase.

Interested to see how this rates tonight up against a new series of Gogglebox - my guess is poorly. There's been a lot of talk here about whether the BBC would drop this but for me the question is why they commissioned 9 episodes for a brand new, stripped format. Surely the safe bet would have been 5 episodes to test the waters instead of it dominating the schedule for 3 weeks.

Sadly they only managed to do half of that
Literally every couple has been annoying in various different ways

Finding contestants for these types of shows must be difficult as you don't want people with a personality of a sock but you also don't want people who the viewers will dislike from the get go.

If I was being cynical, people who do too well on general knowledge in the audition phase won't make the cut.
They obviously didn’t even do a basic assessment of their general knowledge levels. It’s so bad tonight it’s quite amusing.

Probably, the thing is you don’t need geniuses of the Kevin Ashman or Paul Sinha level filling every slot but you at least need to have people of a basic level, otherwise it becomes farcical and not really fair on the contestants themselves.

I enjoyed that last pair, it was like they were two characters from a film almost.

It's a tricky balancing act, producers select contestants based on whether they think will make good TV or not and it varies from show to show. You can get away with being a bit dull on something like Mastermind but it that wouldn't work on something like say Family Fortunes where ideally you want people who are outgoing and are happy to make a fool of themselves.

It's probably worth noting that currently due to covid pairs of contestants usually need to be from the same household bubble. This means you're less likely to see pairs consisting of 'best friends', which you often see on game shows.
