Not a mock or a recreation but an outline idea for a set of BBC One idents that popped into my head yesterday evening. Obviously it's well outside the realms of what could be achieved on this forum, but I'd thought I'd share it - I mean, it can hardly be worse than Oneness.

The focus of the idents would be a Paddington-style CGI robin. Each ident would open with a wide-shot or two of it fluttering over the country, before the bird would descend. You'd then cut to a shot of it perched on something - with the height of the robin being about 1/3 of the screen. This would be the resolution of the ident and the bird would continue to twitch, move about and bob up-and-down while the CA speaks.

Where it is flying over and where it perchs is obviously open to plenty of variations - on a fence in the countryside with meadow blowing gently in the wind behind, on a town centre bench with people walking by, on a crossbar with a game of football going on, on a TV aerial on a row of houses, in a bird bath, etc. You could even have a news one where it perchs on the plaza outside NBH and it would definitely work for Christmas idents as well.

It would give BBC One a symbol that it's been lacking for years - with a robin being particularly apt as it is the unofficial national bird and the red-breast can be emphasised as the colour of BBC One. The opening shots would be a little bit reminiscent of the balloon idents and the resolution would have a similarly 'everyday' feel as oneness - but with a sweet, little robin bobbing about rather than some people gormlessly standing around. If you were pitching it to the BBC you could also add a bit of w*nky PR speak - 'the bird represents BBC One - flying through the air to all parts of the country like TV transmissions' etc.

I don't know, what do you lot think?

These would be lovely and adorable, also would the BBC One logo change in this idea?

I hadn't really given it much thought! I suppose that in my head it used the current logo and placement, but there is no reason that couldn't change.

In other news, I've been able to add a bit more to the NBH newsroom today...

...and I've also sketched an idea for something that could end up in it.

Looks good! Although I think it would be better with a circular desk.

Well the outline is for a Washington-style set in NBH-E and I'm not sure that that style of desk would work in a circle shape.

Ahh. I thought it would be a 2008 style desk which I think looks quite dated. The Washington desk does look nice though

Here's a basic 3D sketch for a Washington-style set in NBH-E.

- The three high-pitch curved LED screens would be on tracks a la Washington and could be used to block off the newsroom view for programmes such as Marr (if it stays in E) or Dateline.
- The blue marked wall panels would be lower-pitch LEDs showing a skyline/graphics.
- I'd replace the Furio cameras with robotic ones as it would seem a shame to ruin the white and wood floor with tracks everywhere.

I had considered putting some of the old N6 sets into NBH-E to see what they'd've looked like with a real newsroom backdrop. But building the full NBH newsroom it has occured to me just how low the ceiling is in NBH-E compared to N6. Although N6 was partly height restricted by the vents that went throught the middle of the studio, it still had a possible set height of about 3m and most the studio had a ceiling height of about 3.6m. But the ceiling in NBH-E is only just over 3m high - to fit the N6 sets in NBH-E you'd have to take nearly a foot off the set to account for the lighting grid. Also the look-down wide shots used during the 1999 and 2008 sets wouldn't look so great with a real newsroom view as it would largely just be carpet you'd be looking at!

Very nice - they could certainly do something more interesting with that space moving forward. That said considering it's probably been used for longer than any other BBC News set the main desk position at Studio E looks pretty good - the simple design gives it longevity. I've never been a huge fan of the catwalk though and think the screens in other studios look significantly better (whether real or not), but taking the Washington design and adapting it for E is a more interesting way of revitalising how they use the screens, even if they were in the same position for the bulk of the day.

Well with the news about the forum, it looks like my SketchUp studios will be turning off their lights for the final time. But with a month to go, I may be able to squeeze in one more recreation/mock. So which one do you all want to see?

I've obviously mentioned a few ideas that I've had recently - and you may choose one of those - but there may also be one set that you've always wanted to see in virtual form. I've been largely working on the NBH newsroom recently and I know that NBH-E is a favourite of the forum - so that is a possible option. I don't really want to do N9 as there are too many issues around the studio that'll mean it would take too long. But ultimately I want this decision to be up to you. Vote by reply and I'll make the decision over the weekend.

Fantastic designs and concepts, as ever, DTV, thanks so much for sharing - I think this odds and ends thread is a great way to throw around some concepts without the commitment of a full mock.

With today's news about TV Forum I hope there is a place where this can continue moving forward.

Whilst N9 may be a pain, it would be interesting to see a finished version of the Lightwell-style N8 setup which was previously teased in this thread Smile
