Should BBC One become... just BBC?

Most called it Border round here. News & Star and Cumberland News local papers still had 'Border' in the listings until they took over by larger group a couple of years ago.

The TV listings in many of the newspapers used to use the region names for ITV apart from “Midlands” and “London” - I believe this was still the case well into the 90s. I assume it was originally done that way to avoid having to name two companies (ATV/ABC and Rediffusion/ATV etc) and/or to avoid the confusion of ABC North and ABC Midlands. I expect that prior to 1968 the newspaper listings also referred to a “North” region (Granada/ABC) - but it seems strange that “Midlands” remained 20 or so years after the weekday/weekend split was abolished, and the company name had changed too.


UTV was referred to as “Ulster” for many years after the rebrand. The Radio Times referred to it as “ITV Ulster” and “ITV1 Ulster” for a long time. Maybe they still do, not sure. I also remember “Carlton Central” used for quite a whiley some papers after its demise.


Always UTV in the Irish press, long before it was ever officially that - only UK publications in circulation (Radio Times, TVTimes, English newspapers) ever referred to it as “Ulster” and it would never have been casually referred to as that.

Incidentally before the 1993 rebrand it would never have been referred to as simply “Ulster” on air. Always “Ulster Television”, in full. That’s not to say there wasn’t “Ulster Newstime” or such, just that “Ulster” would never have been used without a noun attached.

Much like STV. Although they went through a period of calling it “Scottish” in all the on-air branding, people continued to refer to the channel as STV. Still far more likely to hear STV than ITV when people are talking about the channel in my experience.

That's natural, considering the branding and the fact STV were never really happy with the Granada/Carlton merged company taking the ITV name.

When it became Carlton it sounded like it was named after the town of Carlton, just outside Nottingham. A bit like Harlech Television I suppose

I suppose most people in Northern Ireland refer to the channel as UTV, and will continue to do so for some time?

I remember Carlton sometimes being referred to in the media as Midland-based or even Nottingham-based around that time.
