I always thought the whole package looked a bit Powerpointy and generic.

Although the celebrity package was naff, at least somebody had spent more than 5 minutes thinking about it - and it did say more about the channel than this package. I think there is a cloud variation of those graphics which look even worse.

Doesn’t help the style has dated badly too.

Did the regions get idents similar to ITV1 Wales with the regional name underneath. Always thought this concept would have been a good way to integrate the regional logos, just spinning the cube to reveal the Chevron for Yorkshire, the G for Granada etc.

Indeed, they did:

Was The Afternoon Show a local programme for the Granada area?

I sometimes forget that there were still regional variations in the ITV1 era.

Yes, when Granada Tonight became Granada Reports and was cut to half an hour the other half hour moved to the afternoon. Surprised it was still airing as late as 2004 though.

How did these look in London? Did they just say ‘London’ underneath or nothing at all?
In fact, what about the Carlton regions of Central, Westcountry and HTV?

Central, West and Westcountry I believe

Although the previous Celeb idents used ITV1 West of England for what was HTV West

Yes, it was presented by Eamonn O'Neal and in the 1pm slot. Yorkshire & Tyne Tees had their own regional programmes whilst Border showed Shortland Street. I recall Border's announcement accidentally being played out on Granada while the latter was showing a network trailer just before its own junction into The Afternoon Show. This was back when Leeds controlled Border's playout but they still had their own announcers, as it was a male voice I didn't recognise.

There always seemed to be a lot of love on here for those idents. Personally I never saw it - I always thought they looked desperately cheap and nasty.

They did a job but did they ever have a longer form up, or always begin with the hook?

There's one seen here featuring the clouds variant (without the formup) which changes to a slot machine that shows the CITV logo (also features Tommy Pickles from Rugrats).
