Then again, it's the sort of thing where kids wouldn't get what it was spoofing anyway.

A bit like the aformentioned Captain Justice sketch to be honest- watch them back and you can see the guests and hear the crew in hysterics, but the kids in the studio have no idea what's so funny. It's not like they're swearing or making explicit sex references in front of kids.

Always disappears with a puff

Regarding ratings, I think the first showing got about 1 million viewers and the repeat about 1 and a half

Sorry, misread the signs!

Making jokes implying Ant's sexuality is something they did all the time anyway- they still do it sometimes now despite the fact it's supposedly something you "can't do any more".

The very last Secret of My Success- "That's the story of how I got my straight man"

"I wouldn't consider myself a "straight man""...

The thread on this on Digitalspy has someone ranting about "PC gone mad"... because someone in the documentry said something like "SM:TV was the last kid's show which wasn't safe", so that person's decided you can't do things that SM:TV did any more and gone on a massive rant about their made up scenario and "woke fascists"...

I'm not sure what it is that SM:TV apparently did that you can't do any more or "left wing woke snowflakes" have ever complained about, but there you go... TV's still full of the sort of risque jokes and innuendo SM:TV indulged in. They've just shown clips of all these things you supposedly "can't do any more" on a programme at 9:25 on Saturday morning for god's sake!

Seems odd to bring that discussion over here, then.

Watching a bit of one of your uploads James. Can't remember Kerry Katona hosting SMTV Gold at all. One of the clips was We all love Cat Deeley -a travesty we didn't hear it in the story show.

She probably can't either Razz

No end credits at the end of that episode either, I wonder if they forgot to run them?

Also geeky that I've noticed the font used for the captions on SMTV Gold (and I think after the 2003 revamp in general) is the same one used on the credits over the opening scene and the "Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel" captions on the Adam West Batman. With the wonky letters and the squared off holes.

Guessing these haven't been consolidated yet, but a bit of an uplift in it's premiere slot

At what point did SM:TV overtake Live & Kicking in the ratings? I'm guessing Summer 1999 after Zoe and Jamie left.

They showed "graphs" on the documentary but didn't say when ITV took the lead.

I think the overtaking may well have happened during the break, as CBBC just went to having an extended CBBC block that summer (called "Planet Saturday" that year, when it had been the Saturday Aardvark the previous three) rather than a proper Saturday morning show, so people went to ITV because they had a proper show. And then didn't go back when L&K was back in September.

CBBC never took a summer break after that... though it's not as if FBi, the 2001 series of Live & Kicking, The Mysti Show etc. were any good either.

I'd forgotten how good Cat Deeley is as a presenter from watching the Story of SMTV Live. I think had she not moved to the US in the mid 2000s, she probably would have gotten a lot of primetime gigs on ITV and other channels although now she's moved back, I would expect she'll have no problems getting presenting gigs.

I remember being really impressed with Live & Kicking's 2000 relaunch graphics and music, but in hindsight I think they fell into the same trap as early SM:TV, trying to appear cool and cutting edge rather than friendly and funny. I also remember that L&K's 2000 series was beset with technical problems such as mics not working, voiceovers not kicking in and presenters not looking at the right camera and talking over each other. It felt very under-rehearsed.

Just rewatched the final "Secret of my success" sketch again-

"She's blown Dick through the wall"
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Sad that Dick was gone less than 18 months after it aired...

Also the Pop Idol sign falling off the wall and breaking...

That was genius.

Also Chums:

Cat: "And remember when we went to pick our rings?"
Ant: "We had to cut this line"

And Des on SMTV Gold the week before off the cuff: "8 months on the show and I finally get laid"
