Slightly jarring end to ITV News West Country tonight.

Here in the "east" sub-region, we had the recorded edition of the programme. Immediately after the post-weather sting, we briefly had an angled wideshot with the main presenters thanking the forecaster who was within shot on the side screen (CSO down the line from The Met Office, not standing in the studio).

We then abruptly mixed to a two-shot, with the "window" now showing the CGI gallery backdrop rather than the Clifton Suspension Bridge. There was only about 30 seconds of the bulletin left at this point.

It was so they could give an update with the latest developments about deaths/injuries etc, following yesterday's explosion at a water treatment works in Avonmouth (which was tonight's top story).

Goodness knows what "west" (Devon & Cornwall) viewers thought of suddenly having this faraway story randomly mentioned at the end of their programme.

I’m guessing he does it in front of a screen rather than from the ‘weather roof’ in Bristol ?

Just a single camera shot in the PW studio.

Having just checked on iPlayer, Ian Ferguson covered Spotlight's weather this evening with the exact same layout/format as usually used on Points West.

He appears in a shrunk-down box superimposed on the top-left of a full-screen weather map graphic (either stood on the rooftop, or in the studio with part of the faux newsroom set wall as his backdrop). This means that more of Devon is visible during a PW forecast than would be the case if he was stood in front of a map on a screen (or chromakey). Within the shrunk-down image, he is framed centrally in medium close-up.

He tends to be on the roof for the live lunchtime and main evening PW forecasts. The late forecast and the following morning's Breakfast forecast are pre-recorded, presumably at some point between 7pm-10pm (?). The former with the customary "Ten-style" blue lighting on the set backdrop if it's done from the set (it is variously done from either the set or the roof). The Breakfast forecast is always recorded on the set, not in blue lighting mode.

Spotlight came from Victoria Graham's front room today.

Are you sure that wasn't Spotlight's rather over the top Christmas set from last year making a comeback?
Joe, fusionlad and Ballyboy gave kudos

And included a small musical performance in her garden. She showed the setup on her iPhone, just one camera and a big light!
All worked rather well though.

And how ironic she lives in the village of Spotlight ! Presumably it's somewhere near Crinkly Bottom ?

Strangely even though they used Christmas images in the titles, they didn’t use the Christmas theme music
