I love the way that as soon as Clarkson said 'let's go for a break' the YouTube video stops for an advert too. I didn't know you could decide when adverts appear... or was that just a massive co-incidence?

It happened on a video i watched last week the host said "i'll be right back after a word from our sponsors" and an ad break loaded up. You can't even seem to skip them these days. Ads are ruining YouTube in my opinion.

Adblock/Ublock/similar solves the ad issue on YouTube on the desktop (presume similar technologies for a mobile if you look at YouTube in the browsers), but doesn't change it for the implementation on the app, Smart TVs and the like. I don't like using Adblockers but realistically adverts on all websites are so irritating and drag everything back down, what choice do we have?

Pi-Hole is useful but doesn't affect the YouTube adverts, or it didn't the last time I tried it anyway. Benefit of something like Pi-Hole is that you force all your internet traffic through it and it filters it all, rather than having to do it on a per device basis, so its useful for websites that can see you have an adblocker installed and moan about it, as they can't see Pi-Hole, but at the moment those sites are few and far between.

I don't know what it is on the YouTube apps that allow it to circumvent Pi-Hole for adverts, considering the adverts for the browser version of the web site are easy to defeat, I think its something to do with dynamic host names that change regularly - which a browser solution can intercept.

Yep, you can schedule mid-roll adverts in YouTube.

Didn't they do that on some of the live episodes later in the Tarrant era, which was as unsatisfying as you imagine.

The "They Think Its All Over" specials from the 1990s video releases. They were basically extended versions of the panel show of the same name with an extra "exclusive" insert, which thanks to YouTube, is no longer the case

The other key detail about The Television Show (not sure if this is clear from the clip) is that it was live. I even remember them once doing a live link-up with whichever ITN presenter was on (John Suchet perhaps) to talk through how they compiled their bulletin; quite unusual fare for a Sunday night semi-light ent show!

Edit- just remembered the presenter revealed Andy Warhol had died that day, so it must have been on the 22/02/87 edition)

Although They Think It's All Over seems a bit grim now, I do remember enjoying this greatly just for Gerald Sinstadt's commentary, which he delivers beautifully. Never better than during the sack race, where he announces "These sacks won't be going to waste after the event - they're being used to drown puppies in".

Interesting announcement after the PPB, it's David Hamilton presumably at Thames, but with the caption 'Independent Television'. I've not seen that before

it's a budget broadcast rather than a PPB, but I wonder if this was in the days when such things were fed out from the BBC and went out on BBC1 and ITV at the same time.

That's got to be one of the oldest continuity clips I've seen - so much from another world in that! You wouldn't get away with that Maclean's "lightning" effect now...
