Possibly, I know she’s said one son has Japanese citizenship.

I've had a look at Wikipedia (not a very reliable source, I admit) and that seems to suggest she started working for the BBC in 1990 and was posted to Tokyo in 1992. This video from the early days of the Channel 4 Daily would suggest it was James Mates in Tokyo:



Happy to be wrong about this though as I certainly wasn't in a position to watch it myself at the time. Playbus was more to my taste in 1989

Umm. There doesn't appear to be a gap on her career (according to Wiki) where it seems possible she was on the C4 Daily.

I used to watch The Channel Four Daily every day for the last year or so, although I missed the final minutes because I was in school. I used to like Box Office, because it would talk about telly, hence I was one of the few thirteen year olds aware of the work of Kim Newman, Sheridan Morley and Mark Steyn (who has gone on to have a, cough, interesting career).

Have to wonder what the World audience are going to make of the item reviewing last nights's Strictly that's coming up during this joint UK/World hour from E.

That’s one thing I really dislike about modern day BBC News. The blatant self-promotion masquerading as news. It doesn’t befit a reputable news outlet.

This is exactly why increased (especially domestic produced) simulcasts during the daytime is never going to work. A domestic and an international news channel are fundamentally different operations and these kinds of stories, while somewhat relevant to a UK audience, are completely irrelevant to an international audience.

BBC News taking the occassional World News produced-programme during the day/evening makes sense - it gives UK audiences an update on international news and utilises a resource that the BBC's domestic competitors don't have.

BBC News simulcasting with World News overnight also makes sense - it's cheaper, very few UK viewers are watching and very few UK news stories break overnight anyway.

But BBC World News taking domestic-produced programme (save maybe News at Ten?) at any time of day makes no sense. Many of the stories are wholly irrelevant/trivial to an international audience and repeatedly covering pointless stories is not a good look for a news channel. It would be idiotic for BBC World News to torpedo their own reputation just to satisfy domestic cost-cutting measures.

Is it not fair to expect a BBC channel to have a British focus? Whilst I agree with Rob above, nobody is watching BBC World News without at least a vague understanding of British culture.

I’d understand maybe if it were the Strictly final they were covering (as that’s a big entertainment event) or covering it more from a news perspective (first same sex couple on Strictly/the measures taken for it to make it to air). Instead it really was almost a recap of the opening week (the most irrelevant of all the Strictly weeks as nobody is eliminated) and the sort of thing more suited to This Morning than a serious news broadcaster.

It was in the TOTH too so not even an ‘and finally’ type story. It all seemed tacky for a public service broadcaster that trumpets that it provides services/output you don’t get elsewhere. Who knows maybe we’ll have Clive, Mishal et al giving us a recap of the show on upcoming Sunday Evening bulletins.

It’s not really the best look either covering relative fluff (and I say this as a Strictly fan) when true PSB in regional output is being hacked to the bone.

Indeed on CNN this is very noticeable with the frequent Domestic Simulcasts on International.
CNN US is understandably focussed on its domestic viewers and much of the output is clearly not tailored to International viewers at all (your average viewer in Seoul doesn’t give two hoots about a House Judiciary Committee in the US or if they should care about it they’ll need context on it).
It would be a mistake for the Beeb to go down the same route CNN did with its International channel.

I think there is a big difference between covering British news (especially British politics) more than other international news channels and allowing the priorities of domestic news to seep through into international news. Stories like reviewing Strictly are of zero relevance to international viewers and even a lot of 'big' British stories are not really something that should go out on World News despite being a big deal here. By-elections, party conferences etc. can lead the UK news, but are not something that need more than a passing comment on World News. And then you have things like storms and floods in Britain - which dominate the News Channel - but look frankly ridiculous if the lead story on an international news channel. BBC World News receives a lot of viewers in places like India, where storms and floods can be life threatening - bins being knocked over in Basildon is going to seem nothing short of pathetic in comparison.

And that's the problem with simulcasting. If the BBC leads with these 'big UK, irrelevant internationally' stories - they look out of place on World, but if they push them down the running they'll be criticised domestically for ignoring big stories. Permanent simulcasting during UK daytime is not going to be good for either channel.
