Zig and Zag were still around then in the summer of 1998. A shame really Josie didn't get the chance to stand in on the main show (especially once Melanie had moved on) considering she was on The Bigger Breakfast for around three years I think.
Presumably there is a part 1 to that 1996 clip - would be good to see the titles. I remembered they'd added snow to the logo on the bumpers (though looks like they used some of the old Christmas stings too), but can't recall what they did with the titles and theme.

I posted a clip of Melanie Sykes and Peter Kay a few pages back hosting from the 10th August 1998. She introduces that week as "Big Breakfast Gold" and doing a house swap with Johnny and Denise.
I'm gathering the living room was 'put back to normal' the following week after New Years Eve 1996?
Look how young Ben Shepherd looks at the end!
How did summer and holidays used to take place back then, did Johnny and Denise take the full 6 weeks off together? Someone should have noted down the rotas (!), even the unofficial BB website is a bit vague on cover presenters

I remember far too much about this - it might get me into trouble. Basically from May 1997 through to Easter 1998 The Bigger Breakfast took the holiday slots (except Christmas) with Richard and Denise, and from October Melanie Sykes, hosting from 7am through to around 12.30pm. Ant and Dec guest hosted with Melanie in Easter 1998.
From May they split the slot and kept The Big Breakfast until 9am. I think possibly in May Melanie Sykes did both slots, but Ben only did The Bigger Breakfast. From the summer Josie joined The Bigger Breakfast with Mel covering for Denise in the summer - but I think she only had 4 weeks off and that year Johnny had 3. Possible Liza Tarbuck also guest hosted during that time too - possibly the week with Johnny. I think Davina McCall did a couple of days with him too.
After that the holidays Johnny and Denise took didn't necessarily line up with the half terms so quite often they'd be there to throw to The Bigger Breakfast. In summer 1999 Ben had been replaced by Dermot on The Bigger Breakfast and originally Kelly Brook was supposed to have a couple of weeks off then host for the summer, but she was axed whilst away. I think Liza may have co-hosted with Johnny when Kelly was away and then Sara Cox and possibly others (Gail Porter, Lisa Rogers?) co-hosted when she was axed. I think the likes of Patrick Kielty and Ed Hall stood in for Johnny when he took about 4 weeks off.
The following year Dermot was replaced on The Bigger Breakfast by Mark Rumble I think and stood in for Johnny for a few weeks over the summer, with I think Lisa Rogers being the main female anchor in between Liza leaving and Johnny returning. Johnny did have some extended leave when his child was born - not sure if that was the summer of before but I remember Richard Bacon did co-host quite often with Liza, having his own character for competition Thatch of the Day and they did some competition too where he was a Cable Repair guy (Willing & Cable?)
Going back even further and even geekier but in the early years Chris and Gaby used to seem to have every eighth week off - usually the third week of the four week competition cycle, and almost never off at the same time. .

Aha, that Phil Jupitus episode confirms what I always thought I remembered - that there were two versions of titles using the yellow house. If you notice in those titles the house expands but doesn't explode, and the logo just pops out of the door. In the version used on the Peter Kay version the house explodes and the logo bursts out.

The very brief period in 2001 where it looked as if things were returning to form, until around the time the slot was being put out to tender in June that year, and they more or less gave up.

Well spotted. Quite odd considering they are weeks apart.

I always think it's a shame they gave up on the 2001 revamp so quickly and didn't give it a real chance.

It looks better than what came after, that’s for sure. I thought they had the balance (look wise) almost right the week before this - Richard and Donna Air hosted, they’d removed the green sofa and replaced it with two chairs in the same position just left of the french windows, and had brightened the back walls a little with lighting. It looked fresh but still BB. They they brought in those yellow curtains and the whole aethetics just rapidly snowballed into tacky.
Here's an episode where they'd moved back to the french windows but still using all the relaunch graphics.
I think it works quite well actually.
