It reminds me of Married with Children which was also very formulaic, but it had an audience who enjoyed which was basically the same premise in every episode.
TV reviewers especially in the press are too busy pleasing their target audience who are more likely to enjoy Fleabag and Killing Eve as shows than working class tv formats which they use to sneer at. I'm sure there are a minority of ABC1 newspaper readers who like the type of humour Brendan O'Carroll writes, but it is what it is. Populist old school comedy.
I remember years ago a TV reviewer from the Telegraph was really snooty about having to review CSI saying after watching The Wire, it was like turning off the Brandenburg Concertos to listen to The Birdie Song which I thought was a bit unfair.
