I really can't imagine discovery being involved with a venture like that.

They won't be directly, they just share the same parent company. Same as Kingsmill bread isn't 'involved' with Primark!

This proposed channel is the headline on the front page of the Mail on Sunday tomorrow - they claim it to be “impartial”.

In other words.. "It's biased but not to our side so we are going to make it unbiased by having more bias towards our side".

According to the Mail On Sunday, Robbie Gibb is raising funds for this "secret new project" which probably explains why so many stories about are being placed in the media.

Probably would be "impartial" from the Mail's point of view.

How do you measure bias? There's a few opinion polls every week and they all show the Conservatives in the lead. I've never seen Sky News report these or put the scores on the ticker. Yesterday, The Guardian had a poll that shows Conservative and Labour both on 40%. It's reported on Sky News and on the ticker.

If another poll is published showing the Conservatives in the lead it won't be reported or on the ticker.

I would say that poll was put on the ticker as it’s the first time the Conservatives haven’t been the single party to lead a poll in about a year, so it was fairly big news.

You measure bias by taking a large sample of output over a long period time. You can't define bias by a single story, even if it is so egregious that it stands out like a sore thumb. You can say that individual stories might have an individual bias, but that might not reflect an overall bias in the organisation.

These channels can get around the media impartiality rules very easily.

On air, on their broadcast platform, they can produce a relatively balanced service with a mix of political views and angles represented to please Ofcom. The viewership for this will be incredibly small for the vast majority of the day - how many of us sit and watch a news channel for long periods?

They can then clip out right-wing or conservative talking points and monologues and put them out on social media as 2-3 minute clips. These are then shared to a far wider audience than would ever have seen them on the linear broadcast channel.

TalkRadio are already doing this. Their radio station is untroubled by large numbers of listeners, but their online social media following is significant, and it's the "culture war" dogwhistles and right-wing rants (often from one N Farage) that are highlighted on that platform. The station's social media influence greatly outweighs its broadcast listenership.

A good article by Raymond Snoddy on the prospects of success for the two channels:

https://mediatel.co.uk/news/2020/09/02/are-we-ready-for-more-news-channels/

Quote:
But what if their private business plans were to depend on nobbling the BBC and undermining Ofcom regulation to ease their path?

The Murdoch big guns have always been hostile to the BBC and there have already been signs of increased levels of hostility to both the BBC itself and its news coverage in the columns of News UK papers. You could almost have guessed a new Murdoch news channel was on the way.

And what if Sir Robbie uses his Tory political connections not just to try and undermine BBC finances but to lean on Ofcom to lighten up on “due impartiality” possibly even through legislation.

Either way, the UK could be heading towards a pick and match news channel culture which can only underline the already deep divisions in British society.

According to Jim Waterson, Rupert Murdoch's channel will be a broadcast channel with output in the evening only:

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2020/sep/10/fox-news-style-channel-for-tv-in-uk-to-feature-nightly-comedy-show

Quote:
Rupert Murdoch’s forthcoming Fox News-style television channel will feature a nightly current affairs comedy programme, in a challenge to the BBC’s satirical shows such as Have I Got News for You and The Mash Report.

Rather than copy the expensive 24-hour rolling news model of the BBC and Sky, the as-yet-unnamed new channel will only broadcast during peak evening hours and will be based around three daily programmes aimed at British audiences.

GB News is said to be offering above market rate salaries to possible presenters:

Quote:
According to individuals approached by GB News, the station has been offering salaries above the UK market rate to potential hosts. Although it is far from certain the channel will make it to air – with the company believed to be still in discussions with Discovery about its launch – GB News has already been awarded an Ofcom licence and indicated it intends to launch on Freeview.

So if I'm correct in saying, there are going to be two new channels from different groups with the Murdoch one in prime time only and the other from Discovery (GB News) like a traditional news channel?

Also if Murdoch wants a comedy show then Mark Dolan will fit it well with him being right-wing, a comedian and recently doing a viral social media clip of him cutting up his mask.
