BT have added the final stages of the Women's Champions League to their August Club2020 fest, Clare Balding to host.

In addition the UEFA Youth League final stages take place next week, as is usual scheduled in the afternoon. BT usually feature a fixture from each phase of this, looking at the EPG, admittedly not in greatest detail, it appears that all of the games will feature this time around. Some decent action has been featured previously. Nine matches remain. 2*R16, 4*QF, 2*SF and Final.

First time I've seen this on the Sky tv guide (or in this case the Sky Sports guide)... the timeslot is identical to the one for the Caribbean Premier League over on Sky Sports Cricket.

Which, is a rights win for Sky if it is.
Last year that competition was propping up BT Sport ESPN with its vast chucks of airtime.

Astonishing stuff tonight as, during Champions League coverage of Leipzig v Athletico de Madrid, Virgin Media abruptly pull their cross-supply deal with eir Sport, apparently over missed payments. Eir Sport 2 replaces VM Sport on platforms where it wasn’t already available.

This feels like poacher turned gamekeeper - or is it the other way around?

Yes, well there’s a whole pile of stuff at play, including litigation (on a completely unrelated issue) in the background, and no love may well be lost between them as the two top competitors in the Irish broadband market. I was astounded they did the deal in the first place. VM may feel that eir have brought nothing to the deal baring in mind that they’ve had no live sport other than the FA Cup for the past five months. Though the Pro14 is back next weekend, and VM Sport is a part time channel at best, virtually quiet when there’s no European football on.

VM have missed a trick though by not coming to the rescue by sticking the game on one of their terrestrial channels (as they did with the R16 ties all last week). Anyone who can will be watching BT Sport by now.

I read (via Twitter) that the deal expired on 31st July 2020. Surely Eir could argue that with no Champions League / Europa League for around 4 months before the expiration of the deal then it would be reasonable to expect it to be extended for the end of the competitions this month.

Pleasantly surprised this week to see/hear the excellent Ebony Rainford Brent on BBC Test Match Special & BBC TV highlights after being on Sky Sports for every test so far this year replacing Alison Mitchell by the looks of it, the other change for the TV team test sees the return of Phil Tufnell for Michael Vaughan and to further confuse things the Pakistan commentator for the BBC this summer Azhar Mahmood appeared on the Cricket Debate tonight on Sky Sports Cricket.

In the last few years we quite often seen people working for BBC TMS/Channel 5 and even the likes of Isa Guha going between TMS & Sky but hadn't seen much of that this year apart from Andrew Strauss guest commentary on the BBC but that was more about promoting the wear red for ruth for the 2nd day of the 2nd test.

There is a good article written from Adrian Weckler about the current Eir Sport & VM Sport payment dispute on Independent.ie

What a mess, and the viewers are caught up as innocent victims.
