Old fashioned but practical - it means that it will come back to the correct page should the box be depowered.
There are professional Freesat receivers (basically a domestic receiver with an SDI output) available that have the same control on them, again it means they can be set to a channel and it will always default to that if the box is depowered or requires a reboot.
