I was going to ask why they did that too. Looking at the Flickr set, you get a sense of just how much infrastructure went in to support the main 'studio'. I kept thinking 'and this was just for a few weeks!'

But why replicate those costs/efforts on the other side of the park? (I know that they probably weren't quite as complicated over there.) Wouldn't it be better to add another studio at the same site (economies of scale) or as suggested above, use the normal studio?

I know this was a time of great extravagance for the BBC, but it still seems like the least logical option.

No, it was in a totally different building at the opposite end of the park as thegeek attested.

There were 2 boxes built on top of Lund Point for domestic/London/World, but when these 2 were in use World moved over to the other building.

Yes, correct. And that third studio was very easily recognizable by the fact that it's backdrop contained several aluminium vertical members to support the glass panels (like conventional office windows) as opposed to the uninterrupted glasswall the two other studios had.

As noted in one of the clips above, the third studio was only ever in use for a few hours each day when Network and London were broadcasting at the same time from the two 'glass boxes'.

I have no idea of how the commercial side would have worked, but the BBC also hired a bunch of accommodation in Hackney Wick for staff working in the IBC. It's entirely possible that the penthouse with the nice view was part of this deal. I don't think there was much broadcast kit other than a couple of cameras and mics, and I think something like a Canobeam to link back to either the IBC or Lund Point.

Basically a marginal cost for a hot spare studio that's still close to where the action is.

I think that decamp studio was hired out too...looks like the one Australia's Nine Network used for some od their shows.

Found this clip - Huw didn't do the last 10 did he? I know that Mishal did the Sunday 10 but who did the Friday?

Maybe that clip was from How's final News at Ten.

Mishal also did the Friday 10 (which was at 10:30pm, presumably due to Comic Relief). Sophie Raworth did the final 6 and Kate Silverton did the final 1. Nicholas Owen did the last Saturday evening and late bulletins. Maxine Mawhinney did the final Sat and Sun lunchtime bulletins (I remember her tweeting photos of TVC closing). Simon McCoy and Sophie Long did the final News Channel shift on the Monday morning leading into the News at One which was the first bulletin to come from NBH.

It was a bit lavish to have another studio the other side just to decamp to, and all the costs that came with it. Couldn't they have just presented those hours from the normal studio

Back when BBC could splurge a bit and actually have some fun. Oh how the times have changed.....

Anyway, here's a visual look back at those nicer times.....

Thanks for the memories, Rados. You've posted all my favourites there! Great to see them all again. I remember that distinctive shirt Dobs was wearing.

Great to see Martine too. And Sue Thearle. And Amelia and Andrew. And "One".

Kirsty Lang was still a World presenter in 2012? Did she ever present from NBH or did she leave before the move?

Kirsty and Zeinab Badawi shared the same shift between them. It was Zeinab's slot and Kirsty was the "deputy", as such.

I'm sure Kirsty Lang was around during the early days of NBH.

No I sure she was replaced by Philippa Thomas at the start of 2013
