Yes, I think that's entirely why it was called Heart? Remember it predates the London 106. 2 station.

I really liked the original version of 100.7 Heart, used to be able to receive it down here in Hampshire during enhanced lift conditions.


The original 100.7 Heart FM was really good, they poached a few presenters and many listeners from BRMB, and the competition was hot in the early days - remember BRMB was already competing on its fringes with Beacon and Mercia before GWR and Capital merged.

What about Forth, Northsound and Downtown Radio? City in Liverpool

Others that spring to mind are LGR in North London and Sunshine in Herefordshire. Premier in London too

Oh and Sunrise in Yorkshire and London, although the latter kept its name and sold its frequency and moved along the dial

I’m surprised they’ve kept the Radio Aire brand going for so long. Its listening figures are woeful, and have more than halved in the past five years.

I’d have expected it to have been rebranded as Hits Radio rather than GHR though, given it’s been taking the Hits format and networked shows. But I guess now Bauer owns the rather more successful Pulse 1, which Aire overlaps with significantly, it made sense to make Pulse into West Yorkshire’s Hits station and flip formats on Aire so they’ll also have GHR on FM locally.

Whether the Hits format has the same reverse-Midas touch for Pulse 1 that it’s had for Radio Aire‘s audience remains to be seen though.

It’s odd that they say they’re keeping GHR on 828AM as well. Surely they’ll either hand back the AM licence or put something like Absolute 80s on it. It used to be the case (at least from the early 90s) that local stations weren’t allowed to simulcast on AM and FM. Not sure if that’s changed.

For many years until last October, LBC News on 1152 AM in London was allowed to simulcast LBC's FM service for 12 hours per day and longer at weekends.

I would have thought that with Bauer turning off AM transmitters in Liverpool and the West Midlands, that Leeds may be next.

The stations that are becoming Greatest Hits Radio are being regionalised for the three hour drivetime shows, but will have local news at "multiplex level", so for example in Surrey, Eagle Radio will have a regional drivetime show shared with other Bauer stations from Aylesbury to Dorchester, but will maintain a local news service for their area with local advertising.

That's what I thought. One issue that I've thought of is that on Radioplayer, there will be 60 stations listed as Greatest Hits Radio. I get that they will be listed with their coverage area, but that'll be a lot of stations with the same logo, playing the same songs, to search through in a bid to find your local version.

Er, have you seen Heart on RadioPlayer?

Also surely there won't be 60 GHR's? There's only 43 Hearts

If it's anything like Global Player, it's easy to choose the station that is close to home in the settings. I would have thought the GHR app will allow you to choose the nearest station.

By default here locally, Global Player has the London versions of all the stations, including LBC and LBC News which have split travel bulletins.

Same on Alexa etc, you set where you are. That said I always get Radio X Manchester rather than the UK version I should get
