A unique collaboration sees the BBC, ITV (STV for viewers in Scotland), Channel 4 and Channel 5 come together for the first time to share a special film for all viewers at the same time across their biggest channels (21 channels in total will simultaneously broadcast the film). This rare TV moment will mark and celebrate the role UK broadcasters play across our culture.

The UK’s free to air broadcasters aim to provide focal points that reflect and even shape life across our nations. The value of this has been highlighted in recent weeks with viewers seeking trusted information as well as entertainment - demonstrating the power of their television and digital services to bring people together during a period of profound uncertainty. Free to air broadcasters also support and invest in the UK creative economy, commissioning programmes from independent production companies across the country.

Providing a unique perspective on the lives of people throughout the country is at the heart of each service. Encapsulating this core purpose that unites the broadcasters, a specially created film, entitled Our Stories, will be simultaneously shown across the BBC, ITV (STV for viewers in Scotland), Channel 4 and Channel 5, including each broadcasters’ additional channels this evening - Weds 8 July at 8.58pm, ahead of scheduled programmes which will follow at 9pm as billed. This is the first time such a collaborative and co-ordinated approach across the UK public service broadcasters to launch a campaign has been undertaken; the launch itself aims to reach 50% of the country’s adult population.

About the film

The film takes us on a road trip around the UK, showing viewers everyday familiar environments as well as other more distinguishable locations. We journey through farmers’ fields, Cornish coastlines, factory floors, London estates to the Angel of the North and the Royal Academy gallery. From flat screens to tablets, we see screens appear in these recognisable scenes that make-up our daily lives and routines.

The screens feature iconic moments from some of the UK’s favourite and most-loved television. These include clips from the BBC’s Blue Planet II, Fleabag, Strictly Come Dancing, I May Destroy You, BBC News and BBC Sport, EastEnders, Man Like Mobeen and Normal People. ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent, Harry’s Heroes, This Morning, Coronation Street, Quiz, ITV News and ITV Sport. Channel 4’s Paralympics, Great British Bake Off, Ackley Bridge, Channel 4 News, Gogglebox and Derry Girls. Channel 5’s The Yorkshire Vet, Cruising with Jane McDonald, New Lives in the Wild with Ben Fogle, Channel 5 News, Cold Call and Around the World by Train with Tony Robinson.

The film tells a moving message of unity and pride through the lens of British TV. It draws our attention to the countless stories that have changed us and helped us see the world differently, reminding us of the role British TV can play in our own stories too, with the powerful point: “This is the story of everything we’ve done. And everything we could be. This is us. This is who we are. Our stories are your stories.”

It’s not quite the first time all five channels have simultaneously broadcast the same thing - Band Aid 20 comes to mind and probably others - but it still sounds rather unique.

It's a shame the BBC Press Office couldn't get the Twitter handles for Channel 4 and Channel 5 right.

Yeah, should be @Channel4 and @Channel5_tv, not @C4, which belongs to an unrelated company, and @C5, which belongs to a random individual.

It'll be the first time so many channels have broadcast the same thing.

It'll be a confusing couple of minutes at Red Bee and a few other control rooms with everything showing the same thing

Could it work the same way as Queenie's speech, everyone opting in at the same time?

That's not how the Queens Christmas Message works and that's not how it will work tonight either.

No need to over complicate it, they'll each just have their own copy. Of course apart from STV and S4C all the changes channels involved come from the same couple of playout centres, not that that will make it any more easier or difficult

Oh. I swear I remember reading somewhere about the networks having to opt in to the speech at the same time.

Looking forward to this.
