I didn't think bleed through like that was a thing in these days of digits

.....or even balanced analogue audio, (unless there's a crossed or one legged pair)

I couldn't be an ancient PC with a mini jack into it doing the streaming could it - surely not!

Oh, that would never happen Very Happy

Only three iconic '194s' left to go now, Edinburgh, Sheffield, and London.

I had two sticky markers on my car radio dial in 1981. One indicating 194m, the other 261/257. Happy motoring !

I wonder how long it will be till Radio 4 on 198 vanishes, that truly will be the end of an era. Even if nobody does listen to it any more.

The 261s are all still going strong aren't they?
Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, London, Plymouth, and Norwich.
Will Manchester be the first to go?

Lots of electricity meters still listen to it apparently, possibly more than its human audience !

France Inter on 162 closed a few years ago, but the transmitter is still on because it supplies the timecode for railway station clocks over all of France !

I imagine they'd keep that running even if Radio 4 itself went. I seem to remember reading a similar service stayed on air when one of the French Longwave services (France Inter IIRC) closed down.

Yes, (my edit crossed your post). It's whether the electricity companies are willing to pay to keep Droitwich 198 going, I think I know who would end up picking up the bill Rolling Eyes

Most likely as its Bauer, that said when they closed their MW transmitters in the west midlands they didn't close Birmingham's and IIRC the license was recently extended.

I'd have thought that Global's two MW frequencies in London are safe for now, LBC News is doing good business, and it's one of the only remaining analogue outlets for Gold (a format which sounds more authentic on MW).

Sorry for going off topic, but does anybody know a good way to recreate this sort of AM radio sound on either Audacity or VLC Media Player?

There’s an AM radio effect preset in the Equaliser in Audacity.

Presumably the roll out of smart meters is going to render that obsolete eventually? I think the meters default to the high rate in the absence of the signal from Droitwich so a considerable incentive for anybody on a dual rate meter to have a smart meter installed before 198 goes.

I thought the plan was for it to keep going until they ran out of valves?
