So I think I have gotten this need to pay tribute to the 1999/2000 graphics for BBC News out of my system. Once again I want to thank @Bail for inspiring me to work on these, and also following his example, I recorded myself finishing the last part of the titles - taking the 3D Rendered elements, and creating a finished shot.
I've been a follower of your motion design for about 12 years now (found your YouTube via your 2008 Breakfast mock), and as usual, your efforts are astounding - truly fantastic. The additional texture and colour, particularly the tinges of purple you've given both title sequences haven't gone unnoticed and look gorgeous. The only nitpicky thing I would point out is the expansion and contraction of the red oval under the Gill '9' is quite sudden and juddery, whereas in the original it was more fluid, but in the grand scheme of things, it's a minor point in what is otherwise a masterpiece. Well done.
I wish my stupid laptop would play ball it just goes black using Adobe After Effects
I find it's better to use the Adobe Creative Suite on a computer that's built to handle it, rather than attempting to use it onto an underpowered laptop. It annoys me as I pay for the whole suite and can only use Photoshop and Illustrator at home, but it gives me the motivation to scrape up some brass to build a properly powered machine!
So a little bit of information I learnt on twitter today, from the Senior Designer
Nicola Mills
for the original designs.

It was an interesting job, across the news brand, so took about 18 months and many hours in post at The Mill

That countdown took a long time to make back then. I think we were going a bit stir crazy by that point But yes, all felt like quite an achievement, and quite unusual for news branding.

We did it all in Flame, the Mac based stuff just wasn’t fast enough then. Even in Flame it was long hours, was working 18hr days in the final weeks before broadcast. We laughed a lot though also.

You’re right. Some of the elements were filmed, the maps cut out of metal and shot on a small motion control rig. The large numbers, 1,6,9, 10 & 24, clock etc. On BBC Breakfast news idents we filmed fireworks exploding amongst other stuff.

The client was v happy, but the media slammed it at first. However that was traditional, each time the news branding changed it got slated apparently

I loved those titles, lots of playing with light in a studio, sparkles off water etc also exploded a globe full of glitter - and film it v high speed. Mixed film elements with CGI fireworks also.

There was a lot of brand strategy work done before I came on board, so LN already had the job - then it was a bit of a rush to translate the strategy to visuals for 1,6,9 (later 10), deliver those, and then roll concept out over entire brand. Never, ever, enough time.

Fascinating stuff. Which title sequence is she referring to with the sparkles off water and a globe full of glitter?
it's a bit clearer when you read the original thread on twitter. she's talking about the breakfast titles both with the fireworks and water / glitter.
fascinating although makes perfect sense that there are so many physical elements as part of the construction of the titles but you forget how long ago this actually was. it shows how incredibly ahead of their time in terms of design they were.
This is from Nicola Mills's website and has a clearish copy of the breakfast titles in the middle and you can clearly see the glitter now you know its there
