Thought Europe Shine A Light was brilliant tonight. I was rather sceptical, but really well presented and hit the right tone.

Ok, I'm an hour and 20 behind but Johnny Logan was a very downbeat way to begin. Would be far more suitable for a reflective moment later in the show.

Shall I tell Brekkie or does someone else want to Shocked

God, fear the suicide rate will be up across Europe tonight. Such a missed opportunity to provide some much needed uplifting TV across the continent.

The BBC got it spot on with their own show and I wonder if a nostalgia based contest with countries selecting one previous entry each to represent them (heck, maybe non-winners to make it less predictable) would have got around the insurance issue.

The individual items, aside from the 2020 entry clips, were mainly good on their own but put together the overall tone of the show was incredibly sombre. It did get better towards the end. Both performances of Love Shine A Light were the highlights.

Surely it's more sense to have a new thread for 2021 instead of keeping the 2020 thread for two years?

Thought about that, but the whole story extends into a second year, so I feel that we should continue in this thread which takes the event forwards. Many threads are much much longer.

Fair enough.

Perhaps a little harsh....

Reading the background articles on the EBU websites, the date could change out of its now traditional mid May slot. The rather vague term 'Spring' being used. This will of course impact on the National selections if the contest is brought forward into April or even late March. 2021 is going to be incredibly busy for broadcasters as it is. Easter 2021 in the first weekend of April.

I don't think much can be planned with any certainty for next year yet. I'm in the new thread camp though once the dates are known.

So, I’m confused.

On BBC One it was on 8-10 and RTÉ One it was 8-10.05, same (in BST) on TVE Internacional
On Das Erste in Germany it is on 8.55-10.55 BST - apparently according to Wikipedia it was delayed there.
But in Italy (on Rai 1) it is scheduled 7.35-10.35 BST. Where did the extra hour come from? SMTv in San Marino is also Currently simulcasting Rai 1 including ads. On RTPi (Portugal) it is being shown 9-11.15 which is also longer.

Is there a longer version which some channels are broadcasting? Or are they just using local filler material?

Might depend if they wanted to shoehorn some longer ad breaks in and time delay it a little.

I assume the two-ways with Graham ‘Mr’ Norton, Diodato and Michael Schulte were essentially the bribes to ensure the UK, Italy and Germany broadcast it live?

Or some countries doing their own wraparound programming?
