I always assumed the orange gradient was added to make it look similar to ITV News. Like with many things like this, the very first look of the channel was the best - presumably created by an agency with the following tweaks being done in-house.
It was originally done by Lambie-Nairn - you can see a widescreen version of the main ident on one of their showreels
I seriously believe they just wanted the extra slot on Freeview and weren’t ever interested in expanding their news coverage.
I agree on the Freeview slot. These were being traded for huge amounts of money at the time & the value of that slot would have been sitting as big cost on paper against the news channel. News channel performed well in Freeview homes (outperformed Sky News) but without a Freeview slot not much point.
Agree with those that think the ITN NC launch package still stands up today. A few minor tweaks and it would look just as good as anything else out there. Studio I felt lacked depth. The backdrop was hiding/obscuring the newsroom & building too much for me.
It was way ahead of it's time too with focusing on delivering the channel online and to mobiles as well as TV. As shame really ITN stopped offering news content directly to the public but inevitable considering their ownership.
Pre-news channel though interesting in that 1997 documentary how much they were producing around the clock especially once C5 launched, possibly more than the BBC pre-News 24.
Was he involved in News 24 at all or did he leave a year earlier as part of the cull when the Six relaunched?
He'd gone by the relaunch and had moved to South Today (which, according to Genome, was where he'd started his career in the seventies). I remember the first time he appeared on ITV itself was in the summer of 2000, doing the lunchtime news.
When did the ITN World News end - I think at some point the starting putting out the ITV Evening News to stations that used to take it instead and I'm guessing it had gone by the time the ITN News Channel launched in mid-2000.

The ITN World News ended on NBC Europe on the final day of the channel, 30 June 1998, and was briefly revived for US Public Television stations as ITN World News for Public Television, apparently with new music and a new set. But that lasted less than a year, so it was done before the ITN News Channel came along.
I must admit, I would have liked it if one of the bulletins on the ITN News Channel had been branded as ITN World News and had a more World News focus, but obviously that didn't happen.
Lol. Gotta hand it to the Los Angeles Times in that article.
Of Mishal Husain: “understated..... not even a necklace in sight for two nights in a row.....”
Of ITN World News: watched it for a few months whilst on my first overseas assignment in the early nineties. Katy Haswell seemed to be its only presenter by that time. If I recall correctly, Selina Scott was the launch anchor of the ITN World News, right?
