If anything they'll be looking to add episodes to make up for what they lost.

I guess had they been airing 2, 3 or 4 episodes a week it would have been a similar case of just halving the episode run, so 6 hasn't been a huge advantage - just left more holes in the schedule really.

That's the problem with ITV being so reliant on soaps. They effectively have six or seven empty slots a week to fill at the moment and if they cant get new episodes to air by July it could be 12 or 13 slots a week to fill.

Even if they do manage to avoid going off air they most likely wont be able to film as much so it will be 3 or even less episodes a week for a long time, in my opinion.

Problem of their own making, albeit a decision made years ago but one which is now coming back to bite them. It was obviously easier at the time just to plonk another episode of a soap in a slot, whereas prior to the soap schedule they would have had a whole host of other things to retain the audience.

Actually going to be interesting to see the episodes once production does resume, presumably they'll have partially filmed some episodes so we'll likely have some episodes consisting of scenes filmed before and after the shutdown and it will be hard to hide a 3 month odd gap in production in terms of the actors appearances and similar.
Especially when the cast has to do their own hair and make-up. Expect episodes where people have longer hair in some scenes than in others. There's no way they'll be able to match it exactly. Didn't this same problem manifest after the 1979 Strike?

Im not sure, but I know Gail and Brian's wedding (first time around) shown in November 1979 was meant to be have been aired in August 1979 so it looked like summer when they filmed the outside scenes.

I agree totally. And if they had kept 7pm for quiz shows etc on a Monday and Friday for example they would have more repeats to choose from to fill the empty slots.

Presumably will be a long time until soaps do return to normal scheduling. They'll need to wait until production returns to normal until they'll even be able to make enough episodes, which could be a while, then they'll need to build up the backlog of episodes, and of course there's the possibility production could end again at any time so they'll want a decent number of episodes in the can.

It’ll generate a bit of chat online and some click bait stories in the tabloids but I’m sure beyond that viewers will accept it.

In any case you often get actors appearing on screen with heavy tans when the character hasn’t possibly been on holiday

I guess we should be able to accept a character suddenly appearing with a different haircut given we’ve coped with the likes of Tracy and Nick changing their entire heads on occasions.

I wonder though if Craig might become the first character to suddenly appear with a different body overnight...

(Seriously though, fair play to him - that’s quite an achievement!)

And there was a click bait story about that, asking how they would possibly include it in the storyline.

What they should know is that Craigy getting fit was already in the storyline, when he was barely able to chase a criminal down the street. I think that is half the reason why he’s done it in real life.

I do think Corrie benefits slightly from effectively having three hour-long episodes a week compared to six half hours to fill, but neither should ever have gone past 5 episodes IMO, and more importantly they should be willing to drop episodes rather than reschedule them when pre-planned events occur.

Anyway, we are where we are. The current Thursday night schedule must be the first in a long time where ITV has back to back half hour shows from 7-9pm and none of them are soaps.

If they do run out I suspect for Corrie they'll rerun some of the special shows they've done about certain actresses or characters (I think they've got a few new ones too, possibly made in lockdown), and I think they'd go for repeats rather than lose it complete it - but I just hope they're a bit more considered in what they show than Hollyoaks has been so far. I think if they focused on one character a week they could then choose three episodes from across the years, rather than only airing recent "classics" which usually aren't. Even if they focus primarily on episodes since 2000 there is still quite a bit to choose from - indeed one of the strengths of Corrie is it's always been about strong characters rather than strong episodes, so it's actually harder than you think picking out individual episodes IMO.

Both should have stayed at 3 times a week, Corrie possibly with a 4th episode on a Sunday like it was late 90s. I liked that as it was good getting episodes set on a Sunday. Although there is nothing to stop them setting an episode on a weekend even if its broadcast on a weekday. Effectively under normal circumstances we only ever visit Weatherfield on a Monday, Wed and Friday - weekends and Tuesdays/Thursday don't exist in Weatherfield! Occasionally they would set an episode on a Sunday on a Monday, before the 4th was introduced, as seen on the recent ITV3 episodes.

Definitely not for reschedule episodes when displaced for sport. The slot is filled with a sport event, ratings are not usually a concern for that night so no need to show an 'extra' show the following week. Keep it 3 or 4 a week and reserve hour long specials and 5 night a week runs for the occasional big week of episodes when the story justifies it.

I think they have announced some special episodes if they run out. They have plenty of family album specials they can show although would be out of date now if they played one from the 2000s about the Barlows or Platts.

its a shame this has happened so close to the 60th - just over 6 months away. Its just as well they did a great episode for the 10,000th, in years to come there may not be much else to write about the 60th year.

I think we know everyone’s opinion on the number of episodes, but as you say, we are where we are, so mentioning it every week isn’t very interesting. They won’t reduce the number of episodes long term, it’s what it is.

When Oliver was taken to hospital the other night, how convenient that Aggie was on duty as a nurse at the hospital. A bit like Martin Platt in classic corrie always on shift whenever they do hospital scenes. Nice to see Aggie, im surprised they haven't given her the role of practice nurse in the medical centre, nice to see people actually working away from Coronation St, Rosamund St and Victoria St..

Aggie who then ducked around a corner, called her husband on her mobile, and discussed Oliver's condition with him.

Clearly she hasn't had her patient confidentiality retraining yet.

I'm guessing breaking confidentiality will be part of a new storyline, I can't see why they showed that phone call otherwise. They never show mundane phone calls like that just for the sake of it.

I've got a feeling it won't got that way. I think it was just a clunky reminder that the rest of her family still exists (and are apparently due to be part of a new storyline in coming weeks).
