What was the y-axis then?

I don't really know what the rationale was behind the charts and the reference to "reducing the rate of R". I felt at times like we'd gone back quite a few years and I was back in an algebra class at school hearing a letter used in that context. An address like tonight's needs to be crystal clear and I think this sort of thing muddied the waters somewhat.

I think some of the graphics the government used are designed to do just that - distract with pretty colours.

Is it me, or is the lipsync out? (BBC1 HD)

I was watching the News Channel via iplayer on my phone and thought that too

This is the far end of the Media Cafe which is currently closed. It’s used as a holding area for audiences at Broadcasting House (it’s next door to the Radio Theatre) and staff have access to the cafe there too. That end can be partitioned off and used as a large meeting room/presentation space.

You could argue that clock is merely showing GMT. Wink

Possibly by the time anyone is allowed back in there the clock will be correct again

It’s very simple. The peak of the graph is where it plateaus - and so the infection rate is 1. The y axis can be a number of measures - daily number of confirmed infections, daily deaths, daily hospital admissions - they’d all show broadly the same curve. R=1 would give a horizontal line regardless. R above 1 and the line goes up, R below 1 and it goes down.

Without wishing to cast any aspersions on the Great British public, I think a great number of the people who watched tonight might disagree with your description of that being 'very simple', myself included.

Casting it on yourself there mate.

Channel 4 News were also at pains to point out that the broadcast was made in-house at Downing Street (was past procedure to get the BBC in to do these things?).

One issue with the graphics was that they sometimes didn't stay on screen for very long, which didn't really aid understanding.

And the steepness of the curve would denote how fast the R figure is changing

(Disclaimer: I've not actually watched the broadcast, or any of the briefings, I've always listened to them all on Radio 4 so I don't know if the graph would look like how it looks like in my head, but that's how graphs should work; I'm watching it now and will amend if I'm wrong.)

Watching the speech on C4+1HD now, lipsync is fine, so (probably) a BBC issue

Yes, looked at my recording of C4 News from +1HD and is fine. Even the picture isn't too washed out.

A live link to Leicester on BBC News had to be dropped because of abuse towards the crew:

Disgusting, sadly empowered by the politics of recent years.
