I guess anything is possible to make it all look more seamless as long as you have resources. I guess they’re doing the best they can technically with limited resources and whilst it seems very messy to us News Junkies and Pres Geeks, it still takes quite a bit of effort for those overstretched staff to achieve what goes out on 4 sources simultaneously.

The “average viewer” (forgive me for that) won’t notice anything other than Kate’s on!

I totally agree and think they're still putting out a great product, despite the challenges. And for us overseas, its interesting to get a look in on a UK-focused newscast.

In regards to this transition I mentioned above, I've seen it the last few weekends. It seems that given everyone watching the Six presenter after the quick break is going to transition to the NC/World presenter, they could write it into the script so its not so abrupt.

"I'm Kate Silverton; BBC News continues with Shaun Lay, please stick with us. For now though, Damian Grammaticas reports from Madrid on Spain's reopening..."

It's interesting to see a full length and totally UK centric BBC News at Ten with Huw Edwards on BBC World News.

Never thought that would happen, as Huw normally is on during the week, when World News America is shown on World at 2200 UK.

BBC One bulletins are always optimised for BBC One - as they can have 100x the audience of the same bulletin on the News Channel. The aim is for the BBC One bulletin to appear entirely standalone, not even acknowledging that it's a simulcast.

A simulcast bulletin getting 6,000,000 on BBC One may only get 60,000 on the BBC News Channel.

Restoring a proper close to national bulletins is the simple way to avoid a brief pause in a simulcast, but TV execs seem convinced that 10 seconds of beeps will suddenly see the ratings for the regional news collapse.

If people can sit though 10 seconds of oneness they can most definitely sit through 10 seconds of beeps.

On Tuesday bbc world news viewers got a minute of bbc news at one, it played out with the right headlines with the bbc world news logo before it switched to bbc world news with Yalda Hakim. When it switched, the headlines changed, but were in sync with what was said, does that mean the lower thirds are generated from the individual galleries?

I wonder if they will come a time when they can even play out the right branded titles as well.

Lower thirds and such are generated downstream of the galleries so it’s possible to say have one look from studio C going out one way on World News, News Channel and BBC Four. Although it makes me wonder what lower thirds appear in the various M/Es and the preset/program on the monitor wall and how if they’re generated downstream how are they appearing on the Preset and the M/E previews that the switcher be the one producing.

You can see this at play during BBC One and News Channel simulcast the BBC One does not. AFAIK the BBC doesn’t have a typical master control where the say Studio E’s output would be the same and the ticker could be inserted downstream.

If a gallery is making output that’s destined for more than one outlet, you can only view one of the tx outputs on the main transmission monitors. Generally speaking that’ll be the main output. It’s possible to view one other TX output (and two preview outputs) and switch everyone’s monitoring between them (but that tends to only happen in certain circumstances).

For instance in Gallery E, normally the tx output monitoring is destined for the news channel. However for national bulletins, this is switched to the output for BBC One. (The difference between the two is that channel has the flipper/clock etc and BBC One doesn’t.). It’s still possible for the tech co ord to monitor the channel output to ensure the switching is correct.

The ME banks on the switcher don’t deal with the lower thirds. All lower thirds are added by viz engines post Studio output and pre TX output. They’re controlled via mosart so, for example, when the red tile goes on over trundlecam, it’ll say BBC WORLD NEWS on the world output and BBC NEWS on the channel. Name Astons and story Astons will be similarly branded.

What about ME banks that deal with a two or three box are they just showing the cropped video (with black background) and when it goes live the backdrop is added down stream? I’m thinking of shows like Newsday and Beyond 100 Days where the two boxes are part of the show

How is HARDtalk recorded now, I see they’re probably on the original broadcasting house overlooking All Souls Church. Looks like Steven has two cameras one facing him another facing the laptop. I’m watching right now they’re interviewing someone from Succession via a MacBook Pro. However the MacBook doesn’t seem to be connected to anything, how are they getting the video from the guest to be full screen? Are they using a screen recorder or are they outputting to an Apple TV and recording from there?

I don’t know what’s stopping them from using the regular studio, I know deejay said there were some extra things that are required for Hardtalk. But surely they could still record in studio C.

I wonder when Studio B comes back it will come back with modification and more automation
