They would have covered much of the same content though as they'll both be featuring the 41 entries in some form. It was always going to be one or the other and unfortunately they commissioned their own thing earlier than the EBU announced theirs.
The programming which will feature during the week includes a 'Road to Eurovision' program filmed in the Netherlands, replays of the last five Grand Finals on weekday afternoons, a local 'Big Night In' special and the EBU 'Shine a Light' program on Sunday night
No spoilers now!! It was great to see it again and tweet along with fans all over the place in real time. It very much felt like a eurovision from A VERY LONG TIME AGO!!

There was a lot more pomp and ceremony about the production, I suppose it’s taken many years to move on to the type of production that we have nowadays.

1996 to around 2001 were really the big transition years. You started to see the Orchestra phased out, and the more sedated "night at the proms" types of audience being gradually replaced with a more passionate party atmosphere.
This was also really the last year where the contest relied a lot more on the jury than the televote (till the 50:50 split came in), so that plays a lot into shaping how countries would chose their entries in the future.
I think also this was around the time the production staging was starting to become more of a big deal. The BBC did a doc of the 1998 contest set up and a lot of it revolves around having to faff with Delegations on the camera work of their performances. I gather these days, they've generally managed to clear that up so it's less of an issue overall.
1997 looked so much more modern than the other Irish hosted contests and there was only 2 years between the productions. Was RTE still financially crippled at this point because they did a really good job! Great to see this contest in high quality for the first (?) time online as well. Would be great to see 1998 soon as well.
