XFL bites the dust (BT were UK rights holders)

Out of interest, XFL seem to owe a lot of money to Bexel NEP - $1.2 million!
XFL was part owned by the WWE. So I'm sure they can afford it. If not, it could drag WWE down with them.

Also in the Guardian, "WWE deemed essential service in Florida – alongside hospitals and fire departments"
It seems that they have been given the go ahead to run a closed set.

Essential services now include “employees at a professional sports and media production with a national audience – including any athletes, entertainers, production team, executive team, media team and any others necessary to facilitate including services supporting such production – only if the location is closed to the general public”.

XFL was all down to Vince Mahon's (owner of WWE) inabillity to get an NFL franchise - or be a major shareholder in one.
Some of the other owners want to keep him well away from their game as much as possible.

And this was the second attempt to create the XFL, although the first was a bit different.

That first attempt is documented in the (very good) 'This Was the XFL' in ESPN's '30 For 30' series

Quite looking forward to the 30 for 30 they'll eventually make about the current situation!

Bob Costas famously said of the original XFL that it was “not WWF enough for that crowd, and it’s not good enough football for the sports-minded crowd”.

Things did improve this time around, but obviously fans just weren’t interested.

That schedule seems bonkers. Even if it happens, all the events will end up damaged, as teams split their efforts or simply don't compete at some of the grand tours.

Something has to give, this just has the feeling of denial or desperation about it.

It's not only bonkers - It just can't work. No professional cyclists body will take 60 days of road racing crammed into three months. Le Tour, then into La Veulta, into La Giro with a little more than 10-14 days rest in between?

Naa. The La Veulta stuck in the middle will be the largest sufferer of big name withdrawals.

This match .... tonight .... gets a rerun ....
